1990 Sea Ray 180 OB - Refit project by a newbie

Keep cutting along your current line. The shoulder goes up and meets the hull sides and that is the bottom of the boat which you do not want to cut through. I left the edges on the deck as deep blue mentioned to get an indicator of deck height and profile but eventually took them off so that the...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Few updates! It lives! Almost a year to the day, fired up and ran like a champ. Had a hot start issue, so I put in a fuel pressure regulator. Stock mechanical pump was putting out well over 10 PSI!!! Anyone with hot starts on an Edelbrock I would highly suggest this be your starting point. Fuel...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Had to get a little creative with some of the old merc parts. There was a bronze looking (plated) on the transom plate that I cut and bent to get the double 90 at the opposite end of the clevis. Then slid a piece of gas main over that and welded it, and welded a nut to the other end. Gives some...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Got some paint on the seat boxes and got the drive hooked up. Had to do some fabricating to get the original steering to work on the Volvo. And a couple custom brackets to mount various things like the water separator. Been wiring like a maniac installed two batteries with a dual battery switch...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

And then the moment of truth, how good were my measurements. Reminder, this boat came with a 4.3 Merc as the largest offering from the factory and here we are at Volvo Penta and a 305 SBC.

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Didn't have enough Gel to finish the Bilge and Transom but had some Sherwin Williams protective and marine coating - alkyd enamel in white. Colour doesn't match too bad and the price sure was right.

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Gelcoat is down! Definitely interesting rolling it and a steep learning curve. Typically not one to leave well enough alone so I had to leave the room before I screwed something up! All the vertical surfaces will be getting carpet so don't worry about the shoddy edges.

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Something's funky and I cant edit so well just start again I guess. Bottom of the floor got slow coated and then a layer of 1.5oz csm and then a final test fit. The light coloured spot is a little relief sanding I did just to ensure that the fuel filler hose didn't rub on the bottom of the...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Few more picture updates!! Motor mounts built and test fitted. Excuse the grey mess, had some free filler to use up , it the nicest stuff to work with. Finished the last layer on the stringers with a fully length layer of 1708 with an increased overlap. Few spots to touch up in the CSM over the...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

had a spare block lying around so mocking up the mounts and bulkheads for the oversized motor has been much easier.

    PROJECT SEA RAY

stringers are bedded and the glass work has been started.I also got the false floor under the gas tank installed. I ended up doubling up the stringer width both for the new motor, and it made sense while splicing into the existing wood in the front as you can see in the middle picture. First...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

I know its been a while since updates but here is where we stand: Transom is in and glassed - tabbed and two layers of 1708 - had to patch in a spot on the one side as we had some trouble getting it to lay down. *** JUST NOTICED - it looks like there is some air at the floor on the right side...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Messed around Friday night getting all the wiring sorted out and tearing apart one of the bow seat backs that was rotten. Got the new wood cut out and bent to shape as I waited for a truck to go swap out some plywood. Got one piece cut and almost perfectly fit and then we realized my buddies...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

This is my plan: Red: OLD Blue: New Make the core material slightly smaller to allow 4-6" of tabbing area all the way around but instead of going with the two thicknesses ( one sheet with a smaller square sheet laminate on top, I plan to go with two fullsize cut outs (1-1/2" end to end , top...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

Those are the swim platform recesses. It has dual buckets if you want to call it that. You can see what I'm talking about in this gem of a picture. I haven't quite figured out what I'm going to do there yet, whether I can trim the core down to give me my proper tabbing dimensions or fill that...

    PROJECT SEA RAY

. Ok guys, might need a little bit of input here... As you can see the transom is stepped from one sheet to two, but if I insert my transom all the way to the highest point it only gives me about two inches before im in the rivets. So I was thinking of filling that part in and terminating...

VOLVO to MERC - overall dimension

I know what you're all thinking. NOT ANOTHER Volvo to Merc topic. But I searched and could not find what I was looking for. Does anyone happen to know if there is any dimensional differences between the Volvo and Merc from the transom to the back of the engine? So basically transom to the bell...
