Tower of Power Cold Start Questions

Thanks for all of these tips! A couple more questions. - when I'm cranking, and the solenoid kicks out (I think this is when all 6 cylinders don't fire together) should I keep pushing the key in? Or does this mean that fuel is close enough? I gather I found prob crank for a couple seconds and...

Tower of Power Cold Start Questions

Hey all. I got an '84 Merc 90 inline 6 2 stroke. I know they are notoriously tough to cold start mine is no exception. I know the procedure to pump till the bulb is tight, put throttle up and either hold the key in to activate the fuel enrichener for 8 seconds, then start cranking, or start...

Did my lower unit get damaged?

I'm in the process of changing out the water pump. I noticed that this area around the shift shaft was the area that connects to the holes where I saw oil leaking out as I noted above. Does this mean that the shift shaft seal is actually what is leaking?

Did my lower unit get damaged?

Thanks so much for the replies. I had changed the impeller about a month before this, I wonder if I disturbed the seal somehow when I was working in there and inspecting the housing. Anyway it sounds as if the process of changing the pump housing will fix this issue so that's great.

Did my lower unit get damaged?

Hey all. Last fall, I was late getting my lower unit drained before a good cold snap. Afterwards I found oil had leaked from a hole just in front of the vent plug. I had never seen this before so I was wondering if this indicates there was some damage inside from the freeze. Does oil...

    Mercury fuel filter question

Hey all. I have a 1984 Mercury in-line 6 cyl 90 hp. Wanna change the in line fuel filter. I've never picked up a filter for an outboard before. Does the filter need to be anything special for outboard application or for my particular engine? or will any run of the mill in line fuel filter...

Downrigger setup on a Starcraft Holiday

Hey Guys. I managed to pick up a couple Scotty manual downriggers at a farm auction for a whole 2 bucks for the pair. The have the C-clamp type mounts on them and the arm is about 12 - 16 inches long. I am wondering how I could set these up on my boat, I have a 1961 StarCraft holiday 18...

1984 Merc 90 inline 6 trim pump fill

Hey guys. I'm doing the spring maintenance on my 1984 Mercury inline 6 90 hp for the first time. I don't have a manual for this outboard, but do have a Clymer manual for the 1964-1971 engines. I know these engines are pretty similar. I want to make sure the trim pump reservoir is full, but...

    Starter disengages before starting

Gotta 84 Merc 90 hp inline 6. When pulling my boat out after winter this year, first time trying to start it, I turned the key and the engine turned over once or maybe twice and then the starter seemed to disengage, or at least the engine was no longer turning over and it sounded like the...

    Trolling Motor Questions

Hey all. I am thinking about getting an electric trolling motor for my boat. Its an 18 ft starcraft holiday with a 90 hp inline 6 merc on the back. I assume I need at least 55 lb thrust, and would prefer to stay with a 12V system. Since I have a closed bow with a fairly high front end, I...

    Filings in Lower Unit oil

Hey all, lookin for some advice. I have a 1985 merc 90 inline 6 outboard. Last fall, while winterizing, I drained the lower unit and found some filings in the oil. There were quite a few stuck to the drain screw and in the oil. The oil didn't seem to have signs of water intrusion. I'm...

Do I need to do more for winterizing?

I have a 1985 Mercury 90 hp outboard. This is my first time winterizing an outboard, so need some advice. I ran the engine with stabilized fuel (long enough to get the fuel throughout the engine) and then disconnected the lines and ran it until the engine stalled. I put the engine...

Is it safe to run my engine wide open throttle?

The other day I went out tubing and found myself wanting to run full throttle all the time while pulling people on the tube, I guess I really wanted to dump them. I have a 1984 Mercury 90 hp in line six 2 stroke, on an 18 ft starcraft holiday. I got to thinkin if it is safe for my motor to be...

    Scratches in Aluminum hull

Unfortunately my boat took some good scratches to the hull this past weekend, part of being a newbie i guess. The scratches actually went right through the paint into the aluminum. Just wondering how much I need to be concerned about corrosion on the scratches. Should I be repainting over...

    Mercury 90 fuel leak

I have a 1984 (according to serial) Merc 90 hp inline 6 2 stroke. Yesterday on the water, it wouldn't idle without the fast idle on or without a bit of throttle in gear, usually when i popped it in gear it would stall out. Once it was goin, it seemed to do not too bad. I also noticed I could...

Mounting A Transducer on the Transom

Just bought myself a new locator (2D unit). Anyone have any pointers on the best location to mount the transducer on the transom? I know as close to center as possible, but how do I know where I won't cause any cavitation on the prop? My boat is an 18 ft alum, with a single 90 hp merc outboard.

    DSI vs. 2D

Hey everyone, this topic has probably been beat to death, but I need opinions. I'm wanting to buy my first locator, but am on a budget and notice I can get 2D only, or DSI only for a budget price, or DSI/2D for more. Is DSI the new way to go? Or will both modalities always have a place? I...

    Fish Finder Power question

Hey Everyone. I'm lookin to buy a fishfinder, but have a few questions before I buy. The one I am most interested in needs to be wired into the auxillary power of my boat. However, I remember my uncle having one with a battery that he charged up. My boat only has the one battery which is the...
