The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
So...if you subscribe to iboats university you'd know it's highly "illegal" and "unsafe" to operate a boat equipped with an outboard motor even 1 horsepower over the boat's horsepower capacity. There is no wiggle room. You will go directly to jail, and probably end up on the "no fly" list...
I have a 1973 Chevy truck with a carb'ed 350. Today I drove about 5 miles and stopped for gas, and noticed my tailpipe was dripping quite a bit of water. I know this is normal on a cold morning but it seems weird after 5 miles on the highway on a warm day. (about 65 outside) Engine should have...
I've got a whole bunch of Mercury outboard parts that I need to paint. I got some zinc chromate primer from Moeller, and the can says "recoat within 1 hour or after 48 hours". Is that just additional coats of primer or does that include the paint? Do I have to wait 48 hours before the final...
I have a '73 1500 that I'm working on. This motor sat outside in the weather uncovered for a few years so I'm replacing just about everything. The powerhead was rebuilt just before it sat and only has a couple hours on it. Today I pulled the cowl support off and found this on the water jacket...
I'm thinking about picking up an old boat for cheap because I want the outboard. The hull is garbage but I have to take it. What the heck do I do with a 16' fiberglass boat hull? How much does it cost to get rid of something like that? I don't think they take things that big at the local garbage...
I have this old 6 gallon OMC metal outboard tank that I'd like to clean up and paint. It has some nasty stuff inside so I started to take the fuel gauge off so I could dump it out. One of the four flathead screws is rusted on...any suggestions on removing it? Normally I would take a torch to it...
Re: GENERAL CURIOUSITY...Would a boat with a soft or rotten floor have any chance sin
My boat had a tiny soft spot in the floor under the seat. No problem, I'll just cover the hole.
Or not.
The whole f%*#@(#@ thing is rotten. It didn't look that bad from the outside. I also found the...
I have a 1973 Mercury 1500 that seized up and I'm trying to salvage what I can. I pulled the crank but I can't figure out how to remove the main bearings and the end cap under the flywheel. What am I missing? I want to see if the journals are usable...
I'm putting together a "1973" Mercury 1500 with a new powerhead and a bunch of new parts. I'd like to have a temperature gauge to help protect my investment. (along with a new tach, water pressure gauge, and hour meter) Where would I install a sending unit for the temp gauge? Is this even possible?
I have a 1973 Glastron/Carlson CV-16 (16 foot) with a Mercury 1500. I've currently got a 19p aluminum 3 blade prop and the last time I had it out I could hit 50MPH on the GPS at around 6300 RPMs. I know the motor is spinning too fast, and since then I have removed a ton of soggy foam and plywood...
Re: Which lower unit should I use? Fix bent skeg?
I don't think either one is so bad that I need a replacement skeg. The one that has been cut looks like it is still long enough to protect the prop:
Is the newer style lower better than the old one...or just looks different?
This one is not...
I'm putting together a 1973 Mercury 1500 for my boat. Right now it has a late 80s lower unit with a bent skeg. (from a Mariner) I have also come into possession of another LU, mid to late 70s. (I can post the serial number if it makes a difference) This LU has a straight skeg, but somebody has...
Re: Can I convert my 1973 Mercury 1500 to distributorless?
SCORE!!!!!
$150. Including the cowls, trim pump, and throttle control. And a NEW stator! And a NEW distributor trigger. And a NEW wiring harness. And new plug wires. All stuff I needed!! The powerhead is seized, but I have a new one...
Me and my friend are fixing up our boats for a camping trip this summer, and I'm sure you know how reliable old boats are. Since our cell phones don't work at the lake, I want to get some handheld radios so we can talk to each other. I guess there are a lot to chose from...what kind of...
I'm trying to fix up my 1973 Mercury 1500 - I have a new rebuilt powerhead, but most of the electrical stuff on the motor is either bad or suspect...as is my power trim. I found somebody selling a complete 1979 115hp motor that has a bad powerhead but new electrical stuff, and it's super cheap...
I'm fixing up my old 1973 Mercury 1500, and I'm excited to find some reproduction decals for the cowling on ebay. I will also need to repaint the entire outboard, and I see that Mercury sells "phantom black" in 12oz spray cans. Is it going to come out good if I just use rattle cans to paint it...
I'm working on a 1973 Mercury 1500 that has been out in the weather uncovered for a few years. I got a battery hooked up so I could try out the starter, and it turns over really slow. The engine spins free, so there is something wrong with my starter. Is it possible for me to rebuild this...
Re: Rotten distributor wires on Mercury inline 6...what to do?
Well, the distributor wires aren't quite as bad as I thought, though they don't look good. I should probably just clean up the contacts as best I can and pray it works.
The stator wires look much worse. I put some liquid...
I'm trying to fix up my 1974 Mercury 1500 which has been sitting out in the weather uncovered for a few years. I haven't attempted to start it yet, but I'm really worried about the old rotten wires coming out of the distributor trigger and the stator. I plan on rewiring the whole motor, but...
Re: Taking boat off the trailer?
Thanks for the info everyone! Old tires...I like that idea!
As for the shop...yeah, I got a flatscreen in my office. :D I got an AMAZING deal on this place after the previous occupant ended up in the pokey, there was a giant forest of marijuana growing where I...
