    Mercury 150 xr2 bored .040

    Mercury 150 xr2 bored .040

The guys at shop suggested it and they are considered reputable. Here is an example rebuild kit at .040 https://www.ebay.com/itm/202664768560 I just wasnt sure if anyone has done this and did it work out?

    Mercury 150 xr2 bored .040

Recently lost 2 cylinders to pre ignition damage. Shop says they can take it to .040 with rebuild. Is this a reasonable solution? Shop says the cylinder sleeves are thicker on the 2.0 motors and .040 is no problem. Are there any issues i should be concerned with?

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

This is a really good question. Its certainly an older boat but i have never had an concerns about the structure of the transom and boat. We have always used a transom saver, only used the boat like 7-10 times a year How might somebody size that up? Its a 1987 champion bass boat.

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Thanks what do you mean preignition failure? what might cause that? I know it was running well at WOT and just suddenly quit. I made sure not to try and start it back up or try to crank it to much after it failed

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

I believe that is correct. We had somebody rebuild the motor back in late 1998/99. However, I dont think any of the pictures shows piston 2. I assuming you mean 1 and 3 (the melted piston).

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Hi, went ahead and pulled the heads to see a little more. Here are some pictures. I am thinking that piston 3 melted from getting to hot. You can still see the rings attached so that part is good (maybe avoid more serious damage to cylinder walls. Number 4 looks like a ring gave out. I am no...

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Hi, was out in the boat yesterday after recently getting some work done and spark plugs replaced. Before spark plugs 2 and 5 had gone bad per the shop. After replacing the boat was flying out of the hole and ran well. However on the way in at WOT, the motor died. After looking at the...

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Interesting, So i need to pay closer attention to this. When you say advance box, you mean the idle stabilizer module? I just recently (after this started happening) disconnected this.

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Hi, Wanted to give an update. I finally took the boat to a local outboard shop that was highly recommended. Casey Marine in Gonzales. It turned out being just 2 spark plugs that had gone bad. I was surprised and bummed out at the same time. Surprised that it was something simple and didnt...

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Hi Joe, I am not sure what you are referring too. I have an inline fuel filter after the fuel pump? Do you mean the fuel pump gasket?

What are these parts on mercury 150xr2

I was testing my rectifier using the service manual which says... Connect a red meter lead to ground. black lead alternatively to terminals a and c (which are the stator connectors). I measured 900 ohms roughly the manual says if continuity indicated then connect black meter lead to...

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Sorry for my long post. QBHoy, thanks, I am hoping I can find what the issue is with the limited time I have to look at it. Fishing in the gulf coastal water is great this time of year. I was going to mention a few more things. a little history the last couple months 1st, a couple...

What are these parts on mercury 150xr2

What are these parts on the 150xr2. I suspect the one on the left is a combination Oil and RPM alarm since it ties into the oil cap and the other to the powerpacks (green wire) Also I suspect the other in the middle is a trim tilt switch that prevents the motor from firing when tilted up

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Hi, No sorry for the confusion. I just briefly looked at the RPM gauge when I was on plane and saw the 4500 and did not watch the entire time. It could have been Higher and definitely has been up in the 5800 range in the past. I am going to take it out today to see if I can watch this more...

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

I went through and performed all the stator tests a idle at least. all the imedance/resistance tests for this CDI stator are within spec. I also did some DVA tests on at least the blue lines to ground and had 170-180 at idle and increasing with Throttle. ( i just had the DVM with a peak...

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

It was WOT (as fast as I could go). I suspect it can get higher for this motor xr2 (5500-6000). my question is does getting on plane and getting up to 4500 rpm remove the stator as the problem?

Mercury XR2 150 stuggling to get on plane.

Yes, I used a timing light on each spark plug wire to confirm. Also once on plane, I can trim it up and it gets up to 4500 rpm with no problem.
