    Thanks for the response, flywheel is off and indeed both coils are cracked. I don't want to spend any money if there is internal damage so I guess the next step would be to split the case and have a look. I didn't purchase it so there is no investment yet.

    Might just be your choice of wording, but to me this implies that you are using an old direct connect timing light. With that type of timing light the "signal" lead hooks directly to the plug wire. That would not be an inductive pickup timing light. Just asking.

    Shifting fwd should move the linkage, no need to be running. Manual states NOT to shift in reverse with motor off. Could be the "throttle only" button stuck. Guess you will have to dig into it further. good luck.

    If you goto the Mercury website, support page, you can download the owners manual for your motor. Or one for the same model of a different year. Explains how the shifter / tiller works. Manual says not to shift reverse unless the motor is running.

    When using the throttle only button there should be no movement of the shift rod. It allows you to operate the throttle through its full range while the motor is running, without engaging a direction.
