Stripped bolt on recoil start 29502D

I am in process of repairing my cunado's 25902D (1969 25hp) and the rear bolt on the start recoil unit (over flywheel) is stripped out (1/4"x20x 1) and I would like to drill and tap for a 5/16"x18x1 replacement. Has anyone ever tried this and/or is there a better way? Thanks.

    Evinrude carb screws?

I have rebuilt several outboard carbs, but I have never run across so many boogered up carb screw heads as I have on this '69 Evinude 25902D 25hp. I have access to stainless screw stock and can (should) I use SS screws to substitute for these boogered screws. Dis-similar metals? Other reasons...

    E70tleda tell tale question

Does it pee even if thermostat is shut? I have no pee stream and I suspect the thermostat. Do I have a pee stream even if thermostat is closed? I ran on muffs, water out the exhaust hub but no pee stream. Thanks.

    Reuse carburetor gaskets?

The OEM Gaskets on my three carbs off a E70TLEDA (1996) look better than the new gaskets that came with the Mallory rebuild kits. They are thick rubber/plastic? Are they reusable? They look like they are...??

    Crankcase creates vacuum?

Does the crankcase create a vacuum for the return of fuel mix in the recirculation system? (J90TLCUR) Two one-way valves (below top carb) feed one return line starboard side which goes into crankcase. Does it suck the fuel mix in? Thanks.

    Recirculation system "T"

I am replacing some recirculation hose on my J90TLCUR and I need a new "T" fitting. I don't see it on BRP Parts, etc. Any leads? Thanks.

    Solved some problems today. J90TLCUR

Found #4 spark plug was shorting to left upper latch cover bolt (cut in rubber plug cover). That helped top end RPM 600-700. Idles better now also. Pesky temperature alarm (going off at 140-170*)was faulty head temp switch on starboard side. Disconnected it and no false alarm. However, in...

Fuel restriction alarm on '87 90hp Johnson?

Is there a fuel restriction alarm (I don't see a vacuum switch) on a 90 HP Johnson (1987 J90TLCUR)? I get a steady alarm for about a minute at the start of most outings in my Johnson. Finally shuts off and no more for rest of day. I have temp gauges on both heads (I recently installed them)...

    Install additional temp gauge.

I want to install a Teleflex 60-220 temp gauge to my 87 Johnson (J90TLCUR) VRO V4 for the portside heads (a temp gauge is already on starboard side head). Those of you that have experience doing this may have some tips on install, i.e., which head bolt is best to use for Z clip, etc. If so...

    Wrong thermostat?

I just found out that my mechanic put a #5005440 thermostat in my 87 Jonnyrude J90TLCUR (port side only). It's supposed to have a #0393659. Are they the same size and open same temp? Where can I find open temp for #5005440? I have been having some trouble with temp alarm until stat opens.

    Sticky thermostat or spring?

Once in awhile (one time in 4), in my 1987 Johnson 90 hp (J90TLCUR), the thermostat or spring sticks and the heat alarm comes on at about 170 degrees and goes off at 190 (plus or minus) when the thermostat opens. After that it runs fine (at about 140) all day. My mechanic replaced the...

Johnson Model Number on Evinrude Motor?

I am sure there is a good explanation for this, but I found J90TLCUR model number (Ser.# 7568470) on Evinrude (both trim and powerhead). Are these two motors interchangeable that year? By the way, motor runs great. Thanks, Tom C. Bear
