    I understand by grounding the switch it bypasses the switch I did it to get the starter to activate not for running the motor. Trying to understand system with little knowledge and lots of time for winter project

    As you can see I grounded switch to get the key to activate the starter. Wire from solenoid to vacume switch then up to safety switch. Without ground starter didn't crank. with key sheared and flywheel out of place would this cause my problem? I'm in north east Kansas at council Grove lake

    I'll try cleaning it the best I can. It doesn't have continuity with the button in the full out position either. Ignition only works if I ground the solenoid wire to the motor.

    Thank you this clears up my understanding of the motor. I'm thinking I have lower unit issues if it will not spin in neutral or I'm not in neutral with the push button control. I have power to the shift switch and power to forward and reverse leads. Doesn't seem to change whither in forward...

    Sorry I do have junction box all controls and all electric wires test for continuity. The safety switch doesn't have continuity when compressed or not lead to bottom plate. I put in new key switch, works to turn starter when safety switch grounded but not when hooked up to use the switch as...

    Did compression test both cylinders tested 100. Motor currently apart to test mag system. There wasn't any spark. Removed flywheel found sheared key. Working on replacing flywheel with new used one with no damage to key slot. While it's open I'm putting in new parts. Will then test spark...

    I have an evinrude 1964 40hp with electric shift model 40473s I have never had an electric shift so new to this motor. I'm working on the timing,won't start. I've tested all wiring and it appears good, continuity wise. The prop won't spin in neutral is this normal?
