    18' 1969 Offshore V restoration

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Not that it's incompatible, but looking at the info you can see why one might question 4000 vs 5200 usage on metal. I think i'll still go with the 5200 though if it's stronger. 3M 5200 / High strength Watertight bonding/sealing of fiberglass, gelcoat and...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Whats the best caulk to use on aluminum boats? Specifically, putting a bolt or rivet through the hull? I come across people using 3m 5200 but the instructions do not say its compatible with metal. 3m 4000 UV fast cure says its ok with metal, but is not as...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Thanks ill check again, my father was at the other end of the boat and said he did not see one at the time. A weep hole makes sense, but only one in the front did not seem useful to me

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration My boat has a small hole drilled in this support member where the red arrow points. (not my boat pictured) This was not done by the factory right? I would guess maybe it leaked from above and someone drilled a hole to get the water out, but why up front, it...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration wow i didnt think about the tin oven scenario, well anyway I think im going white sides and grey non skid floor After a coat of epoxy (no csm) is there any play with the plywood or is it rock hard? Im concerned about a little warping in the plywood. If it...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration I'm a little confused on primers for the aluminum hull. Lets say I just go the rustoleum route. After self etching primer on the bare spots, will any rustoleum alkaloid "metal primer" be sufficient? They seem to have a few. I will then probably use the...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Thanks! I can't wait to try it out, I was on a starcraft once for a test run years ago. Other than that I have no idea what to expect! Smaller fiberglass hulls is all Ive ever had.

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Im trying to keep it simple: Boat+trailer -$600 sell my two old trailers for +$700 -$1000 into new boat. (use exising stuff from old boat). Thats the plan so far. Just got word last night my father has free closed cell foam I can use.

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration thanks guys very informative, hah you know that saying b-o-a-t bust out another thousand. With these cheaper type restores, im not quite there but it sure seems like each step i think im going to breeze by turns into "bust out another hundred"

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Im at a stand still untill the epoxy and warm temps arrive. With gluvit inside the hull, before the floor goes down, is it appropriate to only hit the rivets and seams or are you supposed to seal the entire space below deck? Will a quart cover an 18' if you...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Not sure, It would be for bunker which aren't small, maybe 8 gallon tank minimum for a built in tank. Unless I find a great layout plan, I'll probably just keep a portable cooler type setup.

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Dry fit wood. Epoxy should be delivered this week. Bow seat wood (not pictured) is 1/2" marine ply with lids cut out from above. I'm going to close in the original side access. Floor is 3/4 t&g, transom is marine ply. The marine ply is really impressive...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Sorry to be redundant here, I just want to be sure. The ZC should only be used on the bare aluminum, correct? then prime, then paint. If, for example I sanded down to the original 70's yellow paint layer, then no ZC right? How do you all test your new...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration thanks fellas, I guess its obvious I dont know paints. This sounds like a good seal. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the exterior of the hull. It had a decent paint job at one point, it's just scuffed up and chipping in only a few areas. I almost...

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration For corrosion where the motor wood was mounted, do you guys usually just spray it w/ primer both side and call it a day? Once the motors mounted any corroded area will be covered. I thought about maybe a layer of roofing ice shield on the inside metal.

Re: 18' 1969 Offshore V restoration Many bolts/screws are rusted out, like the bolts used to mount the transom wood. Should I be using stainless steel fasteners on everything and caulk where it comes in contact with aluminum for corrosion? The boat will be trailered in and out of saltwater.
