Water Pump Seal Orientation - which way is up?

I have a 1966 Merc 650, (ser # 1869630), 4 cylinder. Sometime ago I removed the water pump and seals to service them. Yes, I should have taken a photo to remember the seal orientation - but didn't. Just looking for a short answer: Do the flat sides of the top and bottom seals face the pump...

    1966 - 650 Carburetor numbers: replacement compatibility

I have a 1966 650, ser # 1869630 (Canadian) 4 cylinder. The numbers on the top carb are KC54T (I can’t see the numbers on the bottom one) (from the parts manual: Part # A-1335-2474, KC-5A) I am considering the purchase of a spare set and have a couple of options. One set is from a 1967 650...

Long or short? - Actual Length of driveshaft is 26 1/4"

I have a 1966 Merc 650 The actual Length of driveshaft is 26 1/4". I am looking to find a replacement. I am assuming it is a long shaft, which is part # A-45-38460 Ther are no part numbers on the driveshaft. Can anyone confirm that a 26 1/4" long driveshaft is a "long shaft"? Thank you Andy K

1966 Mercury 650: Length of SKEG, how long is it supposed to be?

I have a 1966 Mercury 650. Purchased used, it had the bottom bit of the skeg broken. I evened out the bottom and couldn't help but wonder, how much is missing. I measured 14" from the anti-cavitation plate (right term? - the horizontal part of the lower gear case) to the bottom of the skeg...

What are the odds the gears match?

I have a 1966, Merc 650 (serial #1869630) and need to know if the gears from a 1985 115 HP will match, (forward, reverse and clutch dog). I am thinking the answer may be so obvious it is a "no brainer" and I realize the odds are Slim to None, and Slim left town BUT from the picture they sure do...

Bolt size and TPI for oil filler 1966 Merc 650

Does anyone know the bolt size and threads per inch on a 1966 Merc 650 lower unit oil filler? I would like to make a fitting so I can pressurize it to about 15psi to check it for leaks. The threads do not seem to be common. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Andy K

    1966 650 Lower Unit won't drop off

I have spent the last 5 hours trying to get the lower unit (gear housing) to drop off the drive shaft housing assembly - anyone guess what's holding it? All the nuts (5 in total), and 1 bolt have been removed, there is about a 1/16 separation from the shaft housing so it?s not "stuck" to that...

Clutch dog and gear lugs slightly rounded - how long will they last?

After changing the bottom seals, I found the clutch dog and associated lugs (correct term?) on the forward an reverse gears to be slightly rounded. I suspect an incorrect bearing carrier installation caused the problem, and has since been corrected. Pinion gear teeth on all the gears seem fine...

    1966 650, gears rounded - expected life

After changing the bottom seals, I found the clutch dog and associated lugs (correct term?) on the forward an reverse gears to be slightly rounded. I suspect an incorrect bearing carrier installation caused the problem, and has since been corrected. My question is how long can this condition be...

What is it? Can you identify it?

Picked up this boat in the spring and have no idea what it is. Only know it is 14' long (approx) and the merc on the back is a 1966. I have no reason to doubt the boat is also vintage 1966. There are no placards or markings of any sort. I could only guess it may be a "Tracer", which may be a...

    How many poles?

I have a 1965 (1966?), 4 cylinder, Merc 650, 65 HP and I would like to get a tach for it. I am ASSUMING that because it is a 4 cylinder the flywheel stator is 4 pole. Am I correct? Sorry if the answer is blatantly obvious, this is my first venture into 2 stroke engines. So far it has been fun...

1965 650, no power and slow as throttle advanced

I have a 1965 (some web sites say 1966, ser # 1869630) 650, 4 cylinder. Picked this up a short while ago and finally got it into the water. Not the quickest starter, but eventually gets running. Good power and snappy acceleration in reverse. Throttle full open forward yields poor results...
