Testing Resealed Alpha 1 Gen 2

Thanks for troubleshooting with me rick. This is gonna sound stupid but i had a misfire and the clunking noise was just the engine. I corrected the firing order and now its running perfect. I ended up buying that expensive torque wrench and torqueing that bearing the right way and as of now...

    Misfire

I have the Mercruiser 5.7 liter and I replaced plugs and wires started it up and it was running pretty good for a a good 5 min. Then all sudden now it’s misfiring and blowing white smoke out the carb. Video attached. Any idea? If the plugs were in the wrong cylinders would it have ran descent...

Testing Resealed Alpha 1 Gen 2

Any idea what can be the culprit of the clunky sound in gear. I’ve read in other forums that once in the water that the clunk will go away because of there being load on the assembly.

Testing Resealed Alpha 1 Gen 2

I just put everything back together on my outdrive and installed it back on the boat. I changed the seals but didnt mess with any of the gears or shims and everything seemed to go back together just as it should. I ran it on muffs and slightly put it into forward and reverse and it smoothly...

Pressing bearing off of pinion gear

Thanks for the input guys. Always appreciated. I’m gonna try that 150 in/lb one and if doesn’t work it’s from Amazon I can just send it back and I will take it to the local boat shop and pay them to torque it.

Pressing bearing off of pinion gear

Could I get away with using the 0-150 in lb one? because it’s significantly cheaper. I realize it’s an inferior tool but it seems like it should get the job done.

Pressing bearing off of pinion gear

Chris, I watched your video on setting the preload and its very informative. I noticed that the dial wrench you were using was barely going up. I am looking all over online and i found one that goes from 0-150 in lbs. But the reviews are saying i cant use it to set 5 preload. i cant find...

Pressing bearing off of pinion gear

I don’t know the service history and I had gear oil in my bellows so I am just replacing the oil seal on the yolk. So I just didn’t know if the prior preload needed released by removing the bearing and reassembling or if I could just replace the seal and then torque in back down with a new...

Pressing bearing off of pinion gear

Before setting the preload on the yoke bearings do you have to push the bearings off of the pinion gear if you are not replacing the bearings?

    Pressure Test

Trying to pressure test the upper and lower of my alpha 1 gen 2 separately. What is everyone's process for plugging the oil transfer hole to test?

    Upper drive shaft oil seals

I have my alpha 1 gen 2 torn apart to replace the seals and the manual is saying that I need to remove the bearing cup to replace the upper drive shaft oil seals. Maybe I’m just misunderstanding something but I don’t see why that is necessary as the cup doesn’t seem to be obstructing the seals...

    Bearing preload

Hey crew, I am replacing all the seals in the outdrive for my alpha 1 gen 2. I am reusing the old bearing its in descent shape. I have a new nut and preload washer. I have seen people using a rolling torque wrench to set the preload but ive also seen people just use a regular torque wrench...

Small amount of water in gear oil.

I’ve done a bunch of research on how to replace the seals on the lower and upper, pressure test etc.. I’m just trying to push the job off until next year. But I also don’t want to ruin my drive. Just trying to get some opinions on how important it is to do it this year opposed to waiting until...

Small amount of water in gear oil.

I purchased my 94 Chapparal Sig 24 last season. It had been sitting for a couple years. I ran it last year as it was other then changing the oil and gear oil. At that time the gear oil was just dark and no water swirls. I ran it all last season with no issues other then losing a small amount...
