    Oil leaking from prop assembly

Hi all. I'm working on my dad's 15hp 2-stroke Johnson, and I noticed upon starting it up this spring that milky oil is coming from the prop assembly. We took it apart and replaced the two seals, but it's still happening. There's some milkiness to the oil in the lower gear assembly when I...

Electrolysis plate on i/o drive replacement question

i decided to REALLY give it a good grind down, and holy hell, was there a lot of build up on it. it deceived me because it just turns dark grey, whereas the plates on the outboard get all lumpy. this thing is now shining to the point it will blind you in the sunlight. since i can't seem to...

Electrolysis plate on i/o drive replacement question

i agree...the problem is finding a magnesium plate. aluminum is for "mixed", which scares me, hence the question. i'm a just a little leery haha just to follow-up, you're saying that the aluminum plate that i would order would not be pure aluminum, correct?

Electrolysis plate on i/o drive replacement question

Hi all. We have a 1978 Starcraft i/o with a 1977 OMC drive. Currently, the boat is going through brutal electrolysis, and I've been working on trying to narrow down the culprits, and am now turning my attention back to the plate on the drive. Plate that's on there is original, and honestly...

    Finding a short

no, it's completely original. new battery, at one point an electric fuel pump for a couple years, then back to mechanical, but the problems started before that was installed, if i recall correctly. nothing else has been changed outside of regular replacement of burned out components.

    Finding a short

thanks! i'll be sure to check this out next month once it's out of storage. stupid question, but every multimeter has a continuity setting?

    Finding a short

i'll look into that this spring. the only ground i can think of is on the drive itself, but it's connected to itself, if that makes sense.

    Finding a short

continuity? and how does one check the voltage between the hull and negative post?

    Finding a short

everything, other than a stereo added about 30 years ago, is still original from the day my dad bought it in 1978. this rivet issue only started a handful of years ago

    Finding a short

Hey guys, I'm not sure if this should be posted here or in hull repair, so I'm sorry if it's the wrong section. We have a 1978 Starcraft i/o, and the rivets below the waterline are dissolving like crazy. Every year we have to try to patch them up, and it's at the point that I don't feel safe...

    Disintegrating rivets

i won't be near it until the end of the month. i'll have to take a good look at it then.

    Disintegrating rivets

it's possible the drive/motor is grounded to the hull. we don't think the battery is.

    Disintegrating rivets

oh yeah, it's freshwater..sorry, i should have mentioned that earlier we didn't add anything in the last couple years, no. my dad is a retired electrician, and he went through it a couple years ago and couldn't find any shorts. that being said, i wonder if it's more internal than not. like...

    Disintegrating rivets

when it's not at our dock, it's in the driveway, then into indoor storage. in the water for a few months of the year only. i'm not sure what paint is on the bottom, as it was repainted about 30 years ago, but it's different from the side paint, and the rivets are doing the same thing both on...

    Disintegrating rivets

Hey folks. We have a 1978 Starcraft Holiday 18 Elite that my dad bought new when it came out, and for the last few years we've been battling rivet issues; heads chipping off, disintegration...it's been a mess. So we've been doing the basic DIY approach that no one should do (ie - drill them...

not using tilt, no. trim motor only. i think that piece is off centre just slightly. i'll play with it once it's in the water in the near future. thanks!
