VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

Snake, By removing the filter and looking where is mounts to see if the actual pump has paint in the area indicted in the pic (vs. a grayish color of the casting) means you have paint. No used filter inspection necessary. If there is paint in this area of the pump it can be in one of several...

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

Glad to hear that post 2010s may be OK but recheck the vid at about 3:20 and 4:30. Troy talks about taking a pic of where the filter sits (or could use a mirror) > idea is to see if there is paint in this area where there is fuel (not just debris on the gasket). If yes, the rest of the cell is...

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

Snake, I have not seen anything definitive in terms of the years that they put paint inside their fuel cells. Others may know and hopefully can post the years and engines impacted. However, Troy has an excellent video on how to check for paint. Here is that specific link. Any of these tell-tale...

VP MPI Fuel Pump Whine: a comprehensive post with info and links

This post is intended to be a complete collection of information regarding ‘fuel pump whine’, an issue plaguing many of the older VP MPI engines. If there is info or processes missed, please add them in to help make this complete for others struggling with this issue. While this post focuses...

    Distributor Shaft Seal Replacement

Thanks Scott > did not know about that catalog. Going to measure without pulling just in case and see what I come up with. Surprised I cannot find a posting of someone who has already done this in boat or car world given the abundance of these engines.

    Distributor Shaft Seal Replacement

No oil contamination and it looks fine. I recognize its not holding back oil under pressure but its 20+ years old, made of some sort of rubber and its apart so why not? I have been searching on some of the automotive forums as well but still no joy. If nothing found, it will remain in place.

    Distributor Shaft Seal Replacement

Interesting about the cap material, did not know. I have been using the Sierra International, 18-5247 (cap and rotor) vs. a ‘made for auto’, so good to know I have been doing it correctly (I assume the correct material!). Unsure if the billet one has same seal. But measuring the OEM one -...

    Distributor Shaft Seal Replacement

FT – thank you for the comprehensive response! Here is the deal: I do have that crack but not as pronounced. Ran that way for a few seasons but the cap screw on that hole no longer held so I got one of those billet aluminum aftermarket (AM) distributors. Had a little bit of an issue installing...

    Distributor Shaft Seal Replacement

I am in the process of rebuilding my ign distributor for a 2005 VP 5.0 GXi-E engine. One part I cannot find is the distributor shaft seal. This is not the gasket between the distributor and the engine but the ‘oil seal’ at the upper end of the distributor. The good folks at the local Chevy...

Seeking advice regarding Volvo Penta 5.7GXi-HF fuel pump whine

I too had this whine and you certainly ticked off all the ‘fixes’. One indication that is also present with the whine is higher temps of both the electrical connector(s) and pump body. Mine were like cannot hold for long hot. I too did the e-clip but did have lots of debris. But I sent my OEM...

anyone have luck with aftermarket v/p fuel pump assy?

Sounds like you got one of these babies link If yes, do you still have the OEM pump assembly? They can be rebuilt. Same for the AM units. Suggestion is to get another AM pump and send off your OEM (or AM) one to be rebuilt. One source that was doing it a couple of years ago is at this link...

    Dust Cap Woes

@l008com I just re-read your original post and saw that the caps were [always] “nice and tight”. So, apologies about the loose-fitting aspects of my post > when I read thru all the others about dimpling I got it in my mind they were ‘loose’. Regardless, the process to apply the Loctite should do...

    Tire size mismatch question

matt: The OP took issue with the current quality of tires, I am curious of what your assessment is over these last couple of decades regarding overall tire quality. I would have thought the overall quality would have increased for all sizes. Also, it seems you are suggesting that you should...

    Tire size mismatch question

While my experience is decades old, I have balanced 100s of tires, including for trailers. I do not recall ever noticing a new tire runout so extreme it would cause me pause. Tires with mileage on them yes (and was due to a failed internal belt or extreme ware), and then I would suggest to the...

    Dust Cap Woes

l008com, I throw in my 2 cents for what its worth. Frist off for the suggestion about the dimples by @bruceb58: here is a video showing the where and how, link. Skip to minute 2:30 for the dimpling event. But if you watch the entire vid, you will see that (1) his caps are loose from the get-go...

    Tire size mismatch question

Elkins45, One thing I forgot to mention is to balance both the trailer and spare tires. While some think unnecessary, I believe it’s a must. The abnormal tire wear and stress on the bearings is the reason. I have often heard “It’s a trailer (spare) tire, its good enough!”. Well until you put it...

    Tire size mismatch question

I suspect that you will be uncomfortable unless you make the spare the same as the other two, especially given your trip milage. You are clearly safety conscious as well as meticulous, both good things in my book. Go with your gut and spend the bucks. :-)

Re-thread 2000 VP SX-M cylinder for hydraulic hose

Boy that $uck$ > these cylinders are expensive. If I may, here are some additional thoughts and tips: Be prepared to replace both cylinders. Reason: the pin may get damaged when cutting off the one cylinder and that pin supports both cylinders. If the pin is stuck on one cylinder its probably...
