What is best for a raised deck in a 14 ft fishing boat?

I've owned 14 footers and I would never consider fishing unless I was standing on the bottom.

Penn Yan Commander 339 (33') with a tunnel hull

My 15' Boston Whaler uses 3 gallons for a whole day of fishing (~6 hours). My 19' SeaRay uses about 7 gallons for the same trip. Granted these are little boats and 4-stroke outboards to boot, but Wholly Mackerel. OTOH, the 3000 rpm figure equates to about 1 statute MPG, which ain't too bad...

    Parts availiability ??

The manager at my local West Marine was a great guy. If I needed a part and WM didn't carry it, he would special order it directly from the manufacturer. He retired. Not they have a woman in charge who gives you an ugly stare once you walk in the door. All during covid she refused to wear a...

    $250 boat stripped etc..

You go where the fish are, or the sandbars with all the bikini clad woman. And when all those places are within sight of the launch ramp, and the ramp is only 3 blocks from my house, what could be better? Livin' The Dream.

What to do with my motor when towing?

Drill 2 holes in the transom just outside of the widest engine bracket and just above the transom clamp bolts. Install eye bolts with the eye inboard, and seal up the holes very well with 5200. Then, run an all thread thru the eyes and over the clamps. Washers and locknuts on each end. All SS...

    Parts availiability ??

I have always had good luck with ebay. The ones i searched all said how many they had in stock. One of the vendors indicated that he had 7 sets of 4 in stock. I've heard a lot of complaints about Champions, though i never personally had an issue that I knew of. Three of my 4 recent 4-stroke...

    Parts availiability ??

Your post piqued my interest. I looked up the different plugs needed for my four 4-stroke outboards and all are readily available on Ebay. I looked up your NGK number as well, and they are also available, even with free shipping. You might not like the price though.

Penn Yan Commander 339 (33') with a tunnel hull

They shoot out the back like a jet. The wash is quite far. Penn Yan has been out of business for a long time. That tunnel hull must have some age to it. They never made a good transition to fiberglass. Their wooden boats were some of the best. I suggest you pay for a marine survey before...

Penn Yan Commander 339 (33') with a tunnel hull

I don't know about efficiency but they certainly rough up the water a lot. I never saw one pulling a skier or a tube. In my area they only lasted for a few years. Haven't seen one running in many years. When Penn Yan switched to I/Os they must have had good reason.

    $250 boat stripped etc..

It was long before cell phones, so I couldn't call anyone. It was in my youth before I knew about VHF radios. An anchor is required by law, so of course I had one. Anchoring in the Niagara at night is not a good idea. And no boats around on a weekday so nobody to tow me. The trek backwards...

    $250 boat stripped etc..

Good diagram. That wire to the forward gear shift solenoid almost killed me. Sundown, in view of the mist from Niagara falls, no boats around, before cell phones, backing up the mighty Niagara in reverse gear. Ahhh, the memories...

    $250 boat stripped etc..

I can't answer your question, but once upon a time I owned a 1968 Lark 40. Most troublesome motor I ever owned. Bought it brand spanking new. Most every year the wiring harness going to the lower unit would burn thru, leaving me stranded. Once the warranty ran out I sold it. If you re-do...

What to do with my motor when towing?

Forget to raise the outdrive when pulling the boat up the launch ramp can shear off a skeg. Forgetting to put in the drain plug can cause a boat to sink. Loosening a winch strap and removing the safety cable can cause a boat to fall off the trailer. Most boat related issues are due to not...

I don't know anything about boat but I want one

Its impossible to put a percentage on boat ownership because of all the variables involved. 40' or 14'? Dockage or garage storage? Do own maintenance or have a dealer do it? Road gas or marina gas? Etc. We bought a 19' I/O bowrider in 1984. Brand new and paid cash. Always trailered and...

I don't know anything about boat but I want one

We have one in my area too. They advertise stress-free boating. For me that would ADD stress. But that's just me. I want to be in MY boat, which is well maintained and clean. However, for your objective, it may be a good start. Just don't sign any long term contracts and read the fine...

    Why Oil Injection?

I have motors in my collection going back to 1919. Back then you added oil to the tank. I have had oil injected motors as well. I can't say that any of them worked reliably year after year. Always something that needed repair in the system. I have never had an oil added motor that gave me...

I don't know anything about boat but I want one

After you take your boating safety course, grab a lawn chair and six pack and go hang out at a launch ramp. Then talk to other people that have boats that might interest you. First off, you'll get some ideas. Secondly, watch carefully because you'll also get edumacated on how to NOT launch a...

Roller trailer OK for aluminum boat?

My wooden boats have all had roller trailers. I don't see the issue. My last aluminum boat came with bunks and they were replaced with rollers before it was ever launched. Install full keel rollers and replace the bunks with roller bunks. It will launch like a dream. If you want wobble...

What to do with my motor when towing?

When I bought my first I/O in 1984 the dealer gave me a full box of goodies for free. Like lines, fenders, tie downs including a bow tie down, and....red plastic ram brackets (a transom saver of sorts). The Mercruiser Owner's Manual recommended them - it was a Merc accessory part. Our...

What to do with my motor when towing?

A transom saver goes without saying. No one should be without one. I have never trailed a boat with a motor that was not bolted on the transom. If the bracket has no bolt holes, it will require some careful engineering with u-bolts or the like.
