RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

Guys: Just another update for this thread... I've gone ahead and purchased a New Crate Vortec Block (5.7L). Dropped at a New Local Recommended Marine Guy around 50km away... Will be getting installed next week. I've purchased the Electrical Fuel Pump Conversion Kit New Intake Manifold New...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

Further to other messages... If I was to look at getting a 5.7L Vortec Block Swapped over... What else would I need to complete the task? I'm guessing - Alloy Intake Manifold to Suit 8 Bolt Vortec Engine - Some Sort of Carb Adaptor to Suit Intake on this Engine? - Electric Fuel Pump & Oil...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

Guys: Just a bit of a further update... Determined my Alternator was caput.. so thought I'd try taking it on the water again today... Was happily plodding along at around 2000-2500rpm up to around 15-18kmh. Anything further than that and the Engine sounded like it something was rattling around...

I'm currently at 22 Degree on the Thunderbolt IV... But actually have a 24 Degree Module as well if that's more suitable.

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

It’s low power on engine… low compression on Cylinder 3 and water vapour/steam coming out of Flame Arrestor.

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

Guys: I'm now looking into a Repower for this boat. I've found a Vortec 5.7L which looks promising from local rebuilder. I'm waiting for answers based on my question to him but thought I'd post here also.. I'm assuming with this Engine I'd need to - Get Replacement Intake Manifold to suit...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

Updates Guys: Took the Boat to my local Mechanic who's familiar with older 305 Engines etc and he's adjusted the Lash/Timing for me. Boat is running now ok out of the water. I didn't realise myself the Button on Side of Throttle to allow you to choke/start at higher RPM... I've always tried...

It was more Tightening until they matched the images I had with the Rocker Covers off.. Whilst also ensuring they were obviously tightish etc..

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I basically took photo's of what I had to begin with.. and re-installed with Bolts at around the same depth/levels etc.. I didn't do Valve Clearances etc as I just took the Heads Themselves off and re-install as they were.

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I have another look today, fiddled a little with position of Disty Cap and I just never seem to be able to get enough of a combustion to actually crank and start properly... Just sort of puffs etc of it wanting too.. and a decent smell of petrol etc.. I don't believe it's Fuel/Spark related...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I think I'm unfortunately at the end of where I can take this thing.. There's a pretty significant coating of Milky Residue in the Rocker Covers now.. That wasn't there when I pulled the engine apart to redo Head Gasket etc.. I'm not sure if that can accrue purely from sitting in the Air a...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I think I may have worked out where my issue lies. (Bear in mind it's 10pm at night in Melbourne, Australia) Picture below show's my original Disty Cabling Setup when I got the Boat and it was running (before all the Overheating/Destroyed Riser Dramas etc). Basically what this show's is that...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

So I've got the timing on the Block listed as 18436572 As such I've been following the attached diagram when lining up the Spark Plug Leads etc.. Does this appear to be the correct process? I have a vague recollection of the Rotor Cap/Spark Plug Leads previously being installed off centre per...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I've got a decent spark across each Point from the Distributor. Can see a 5mm Spark or Longer from each one with a test lead. I've tried with a different Ignition Coil and Ground Lead to Negative Terminal of Battery no change. I've charged the battery up to Full across both Batteries and have...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I've changed the Ignition Module today and no difference. I've bought a Spark Plug Light/Tester from Amazon and I can see a Flickering Light off Spark Plugs and Coil when cranking. (It's not super strong... but its there... Not sure how bright these lights are supposed to be etc). I'm...

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I'm back to intermittent starting again yesterday... Would start once in the morning and then not kick in again.. I'm hoping this is all a Dodgy Ignition Module... Hopefully that resolves by issues when it arrives.

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I'm learning that this is a good insurance policy.. I actually managed to pick up a Good Used Complete Distributor Rod/Cap/Rotor complete with the Ignition Module. That's getting wrapped up in Bubble Wrap and stored under the Life Jackets :)

RE: Issues with Mercruiser 5.0 LX 4 Barrel Carb

I've got it starting reliably now, and adjusted Shift Cable so it's engaging forward and reverse etc.. The Miss I seemed to have has fixed itself when replacing Cheap Ebay Leads with New QuickSilver ones. (The Ebay ones were ok... but they can't handle the amount of times I've pulled them...
