    A Merc Prop would have a Part# on it, which will include the Pitch, so if your Props Part# now goes to a Different Pitch, it isn't likely a Merc/Quicksilver Prop to begin with

    A Genuine OMC Service Manual, might have the Specs. Have you looked in any Parts Lists? But... Why are you concerned about whether the Carbs are the correct Size?

    That right there is significant. Your Hand should be remain Dry, as any Fuel should be entering the Engine, not being pushed out the front of the Carb. Check the Reed Valves

    Looking at the Parts Book for an 87 40hp, you cannot adjust the Idle Mix on the Carbs, as they have a Fixed Jet. So either your engine in an 87, or the Carbs are from something else... With a Fixed Jet Carb, any Lean Condition would imply Air Leaks, Low Fuel Level, Restrictions in the Fuel...

    Is this 'Lucas Oil' a TCW-3 Oil? Why are you adding SeaFoam to the Gas, there are much better Snake Oils you can use? As for the Oil you see on the Gearcase, have you smelled it? If it smells like Gas. it is likely unburnt Gas and Oil, but it reeks to High Heaven, it would likely be Gear Oil...

    If you have several Props, say 10, different makes or even models, but with the same Dia and Pitch, you can very well end up with 10 different outcomes. Other differences, such as Rake, Cupping, Blade Shape, Blade Area, between the Props will cause those differences.

    Personally, I avoid 4 and 5 blade Props like the Plague, as they kill the Top End because of all the extra Drag, and that Drag is greater at all speeds so your Fuel Mileage takes a hit also
