    Starchief update...

So I've been happily enjoying my Starchief for just over a year now since it's restoration. I thought I would put together an update on some changes and how things have held up. A week after Labor Day 2012, the 70 hp Yamaha had a catastrophic failure. At first it appeared that #2 cylinder was...

    Yamaha 70 tilt/trim stuck

I just got this Yamaha 70 and the tilt/trim seemed a little sluggish. I tilted the motor up all the way and added fluid. Now it's stuck all the way up. Pump motor runs both ways, but no tilting up or down. And of course the manual release screw is stuck. How rough can one get with the release...

    soda blasting small parts

Has anybody tried a small soda blaster such as this... http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-small-job-blasting-systems.html# for cleaning small parts? Such as engine parts, carbs etc. I'm thinking it would save a lot of elbow grease.

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Finally got a couple hours to work on the boat today. The paint stripping is almost done. I ran out of stripper with about 6 sq ft of paint left, so I dry scraped it just to get it done. I still need to get some more stripper to clean off the residue and get along the...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Thanks for checking in.... No progress today, work got too much in the way. I really lucked out with the shop space. Plenty of room, decent light and the owner lets me hang the boat from the ceiling. Whats kinda of crazy about it though is that it's 3-1/2 miles from my...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Thanks for checking in guys. EZ, my plan for the bottom is to paint it dark green. Actually, the whole color scheme in my head is dark green bottom (where the red was), dark green cabin roof, silver/gray bow deck, gunnels and splashwell. This is of course subject to...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Ok, so I finally got a chance to do a couple little things to the Chief. I made an 'enough is enough' decision on the polishing of the sides of the hull and went ahead and Sharkhided the boat. I should have spent some more time cleaning after polishing, as the Sharkhide...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Thanks for the pic/video link EZ. With the 50 mine topped out at about 25 also. I drive like an old man (no offense to other old men intended), so I would even be happy with a top speed of 30. Today my plan still remains though to sell the 85, attached to the Thunderbird...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Thanks Mike & GA. When I had the boat at home I would do more staring, I'm paying rent to the truck shop, so I have been trying to keep moving. When I take it out of the truck shop, I have a connection to put it in an empty warehouse for 2 weeks rent free. I won't feel as...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Another Starmada member has requested pics of the cabin interior. It ain't much to look at, the original cushions were a moldy mess when I got the boat so they are long gone. A previous owner had built up the left side bunk, I think to put in a marine toilet. I"m leaving...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief More paint stripping today, did not work out to turn the boat over today, so more paint removal in the cockpit area. I also took off the rails and seats. I wasn't happy with the way I did the seats in the fall, I had wanted to get original style fold down seat hardware...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Thanks guys. I am actually having fun with this project. Today was day 3 of paint strippingpalooza and I can say that the topsides are done! Tomorrow I'll figure out a way to roll it on it's side to get the bottom. I have access to a forklift and most likely a bunch of...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief It is a cool picture. Right after I got the boat a friend of mine Googled "pics of starcraft aluminum boat". He found the website of the son of the second owner of my boat. I contacted him and he and his brother emailed me several pictures of the boat from when thier...

    Starchief/Chieftan Window removal....

Are the side windows as easy to remove as they look on these boats? It looks like there is an inner and outer frame with the side of the cabin sandwiched in between. Is all I need to do is remove the 4 rivets and work the frames apart without dropping the glass on the floor? Any help would be...

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief I decided to take this week off to work on the Starchief. I found a truck repair shop that is letting me use some space to work on it out of the weather, although today was nice enough I could have just left it at home in the yard. I made good progress stripping paint and...

How do I test old Ray Jeff echo-larm

This old Ray Jeff 514 Echo-Larm was on my boat when I got it. I would like to know if it works but have no idea how to test it or use it. Can anyone offer any guidance? Thanks.

    Got me a Starchief

Re: Got me a Starchief Well, I picked this up off Ebay last weekend... 1974 Mercury 850, 85 HP 4 cylinder. It seems in good shape so far, hopefully this weekend I can get some time to evaluate it better. It was attached to this..... 1974 Thunderbird. It drained water all the way from...
