    Winterizing Merc 650

Hi all,<br />I have a 1964 Mercury 650 that just runs fantastic. I bought it this spring with a nice small boat, but now that winter is approaching I will be taking it out of the water and storing it on the trailer well tarped and jacked up in my yard. The thing is that it gets to about 40 below...

Replacing floor boards on 86 Dorel Bowrider

Brother in law recently purchased an 86 Dorel Bowrider and the floor boards in the front area appear to be rotten. Is this a big job to replace or a do it yourself kind of proposition. Advice appreciated. Any tips !

    Control Cable very stiff.

I have an older 1964 Mercury 650 65hp and it runs great. I have disconnected the control cables and they work smoothly without being hooked up, the motor shifts very well, but I am concerned about the amount of effort required to move the control in and out of gear. Once in gear it moves very...

How do I change the water pump impeller

I have a 650 Mercury 1964 65HP and want to change the water pump impeller. Do I drop the lower unit and seperate the pump and change the impeller just like that or is there more to it? Also how much is a new impeller. I know I know cheaper than a new motor but could someone give me an idea. Thanks

    Boat Motor Graveyard

I was out looking for a lower unit for my Merc 650 1964 Vintage when someone told me about an operation that had been in business for 3 generations. When I found them I think I struck the motherload for boat motor parts. They literally had thousands of dismantled Motors cowels and hoods...

Changing Reed Valves on an 850 Mercury

I recently aquired an 1974 850 Mercury 85HP inexpensively. It was in a guys shed and he said that it was running when he put it there but quit using it because it was stalling and wouldn't idle properly he figured it needed reed valves. I am not saying he is right. But if so is this a big...

    64 650 with 74 850 lower shift problems

I installed a 74 850 bottom end on my 64 650 and all fit well. The marina owner looked them over and said they were a fit. I did have all three positions working FNR but then it was only F all of this prior to getting it in water. I pulled the lower end again and when the cam is in the position...

    1964 Mercury 650 Kiekieffer

I just bought a boat with a 650 Mercury 65HP on it and the motor runs very very well. I installed the bottom end of an 850 and it is not shifting out of forward. The 850 was a 74 I think but it mated up perfectly and it turns well in the water. Is an older motor like this worth spending a bit of...

    1964 Mercury 650 LowerUnit Swap

I just bought a nice runabout with a 650 Mercury Kiekeiffer 1964 engine on it and it runs perfectly. I changed the lower unit with that of a Mercury 850 74 Vintage and it all matched up very well. The shifter worked fine but just prior to the first sea trial I noticed it was in forward position...
