The iboats forum moderators are excited to announce that at this time it appears the iboats forums posting pictures function is working once again. Though we cannot promise for how long, we're hoping for indefinitely.
Sorry, when I read poppet valves, I immediately think of intake/exhaust valves. I forgot about the ones at the thermostat.
The primer stuff wouldn't surprise me, I know for sure this motor was rebuilt. The pistons are 030 according to my boroscope.
And, the foot is off an older model. It has...
Impeller is new as of December. Overheat horn works, tested a year ago. I actually have the thermostat removed from it at the moment.
What poppet valves would a 2 stroke have?
This model has the electric primer.
Recently my 1980 E70elcsa 70hp Evinrude started losing power after a few minutes of running at plane. Feels like it's dropped a cylinder. Doesn't seem to be fuel related, I think I have a bad coil or similar. Sometimes while it's bogging, it will suddenly spring to life and you can feel a sudden...
I covered most of that in the op. The lower unit is off an older engine . It's painted a different color and the driveshaft has the type of water pump key found on a 1976ish model. I know the upper unit was rebuilt at some point because the pistons have 030 on them, obviously bored out. So...
Ok, did this today. It was 1 turn off. Boat shifts forward great, reverse doesn't contact properly, it bucks out pretty much immediately, over and over.
It holds so weakly that I'm a little skeptical that the shift rod length is the issue
I'm going to search for the rod height of the older...
As a running light, no. As a utility light (ie, while anchored), I wouldn't think. I'll double check
I do know that there are a LARGE number of boaters around here that are lit up like lighthouses and the warden just checks their creel and licenses.
I have an 86 Glasstream 15'5" with a 1980 70hp Evinrude. Obviously not the original engine. Wiring for the engine and remote control are OK and not getting rewired.
It's the hull wiring worries me a little. Some of the connectors in various places look sketchy. Front nav lights and rear...
My "new to me" 1980 Evinrude 70hp has never shifted properly into reverse. I found out why when I replaced the water pump impeller. Turns out the lower unit is off an older motor, it has the spline type half-circle key rather than the wedge key a true 1980 would.
When I put a new impeller on I...
The power trim on the throttle handle finally gave it up on my old 1980 70hp Evinrude.
Relay is fine, trim functions just fine if I jumper the wires.
The OEMS on these are basically gone, or $300, so I tried one of the aftermarket cheesebay switches (the one with the bright blue rocker...
Gents, I was poking around in my "new to me" 1980 70hp, using a boroscope.
Of course the cheap Amazon scope fell apart while I was doing this, thankfully it fell apart in my hand after I was done and not INSIDE the piston chamber.
Anyhow I noticed the pistons have 030 engraved on them. Should...
Ok gents she's fixed. It was just a poorly adjusted linkage up next to the carbs. I removed the pin securing he plastic threaded fork, adjusted it about 1-1/2 turns out, and then took her to a nearby lake for some testing. World of difference, it goes into forward/reverse smoothly.
It's done...
Will do. I'm going to look into a DIY on this. I've rebuilt GM 10-bolt rear ends and done cylinder head swaps (both successfully and still driving them 4 years later) so hopefully with a little YouTube University this can be doable.
No, thankfully. The more I think about it, the more I am thinking you're right about the linkage being out of adjustment.
If I understand how it works, pushing the throttle further probably is probably moving the shift rod a little more and that's why it goes in gear at higher rpm.
When I push the throttle lever forward to put this boat in Forward, you hear the lower unit gearing clatter a lot and I have to sometimes get the RPM up to 1500-2000 before it will grab and stay in gear. Sometimes she bucks and kicks before getting firmly into gear.
It will occasionally hop...
Ok, thanks for the input guys.
I have plenty of 1/2" starboard available to me, we use it at work, I can probably make a nice reinforcement with that. We have offcuts that would be big enough.
I've considered only doing 2 rod holders per side which will suffice for most trips, and I could...
I recently bought a very well preserved 1987 Glasstream 15ft bass boat, fiberglass, 70hp Evinrude.
Hull is in excellent shape. We do a lot of catfishing in addition to bass and inshore saltwater (followed by freshwater lake dunk/flush) .
Main question. I'd like to add 6-8 rod holders to the...
I don't have an emergency kill lanyard/clip on my old Evinrude. I usually boat with my kids so it is fairly important to me to get one put on. The control doesn't seem to have ever had one of these on the key switch.
This is a remote controlled 70hp on a 1987 Glasstream 15ft bass boat.
What...
I'm not sure that these are original. I'm the third owner of the boat but Lord only knows how many have owned this engine since it's not original to the boat.
This old outboard is the first "larger" outboard I've ever owned so bear with me please. It's also definitely the oldest.
My 1980 Evinrude 70hp has a few old fuel lines at the carbs and fuel pump that need replaced. I have everything ordered for this round, $60 for a few hoses with a 90 molded...
