    Killing time

Years back we had a woodstove with a few cord of wood stacked in the back yard. Chipmunks made the wood pile into a resort hotel. It sat just 25 yards from my enclosed back porch.....perfect to snipe chippers with my air rifle ! Many them little dudes are fast and make very formidable targets !

Thinking about selling my 90hp 1986 Mercury inline 6

Haven't had a carb issue in 20 years and I gave lots of toys. A simple fuel stabilizer removes most all carb issues or your buying bad fuel. People don't realize how much of our fuel we buy is contaminated to begin with. Proper maintenance solves most issues, carb kits are cheap when compared...

    Fuel system issues

Siphon some fuel from the bottom of the tank and check for water. Water in fuel is a popular problem. Many fuel stations don't keep up with the proper maintenence, so getting contaminants right from the start often happens. I have saw where water comes in thru the vent line.....be sure the...

    Early 2000's Rinker

No matter how good the build quality is to start, poor maintenance will rot the wood skeleton after 15-20 years and things can get real expensive to fix when that happens. Motor replacement is cheap compared to fixing rotted transom and stringers.

Thinking about selling my 90hp 1986 Mercury inline 6

Neighbor took his 4 yr old four stroke outboard at the end of last season for a tuneup so he would be ready to go this season. Oil change, filter, plugs, lower unit change etc.....typical motor service....cost him almost a thousand dollars ! New motors are expensive to start and keep on being...

Unless your two stroke is dead and needs replaced, the cost of moving to a four stroke is not worth the expense. You will need to live a loong time to save enough fuel to cover the cost. In fact, even if fuel was only two bucks a gallon, don't think you can recover the cost if a new motor.

Mercury 850 85hp. Good engine or stay away?

Test holes are drilled on the inside and do not go thru, just deep enough to get into the wood skeleton....if the chips are wet and dark colored there is rot, but if the chips are dry and normal wood color your safe. Holes can easily plugged with marine sealant. Small holes of a 1/4" are all...

Thinking about selling my 90hp 1986 Mercury inline 6

I considered getting a new 40 ho four stroke to replace my like new older two stroke. Compared the mfgr claims on fuel economy for both. The old two stroke uses 2 more gallons of fuel per hour at wot than a new four stroke, so at 4 bucks a gallon, how long will it take to recoup the 9K it...

Mercury 850 85hp. Good engine or stay away?

Unfortunately these boats always rot from the bottom up so near the bottom of the hull is where you should test. Lowest point on the transom wood and same with stringers, closest to the bottom. If garaged that is a big plus, just be sure the structure is sound before taking family and friends out.

    Speedometer Not Working

I understand, I am the same way, it bugs the hell out of me when something doesn't work as it should. That is why I suggested replacing that Speedo with a more useful gage that actually does something usefull. Sorry to say, but those pressure Speedos are always an issue. I had to work on mine...

Mercury 850 85hp. Good engine or stay away?

You have been concentrating your efforts, what about the boat itself ? 74 is quit old for a glasser, be sure you check the transom and strings for any rot or soft wood. Looks don't mean much if the skeletal structure has bad wood. Good luck !

    Speedometer Not Working

Find a different speedo, those pressure units are very inaccurate below 20 mph. Replace the Speedo with a more useful gage to fill the space then use or buy a sonar unit with GPS. Your speed will be very accurate from 1 mph on up to infinity....even if you get it unclogged or replaced, it will...

    Trolling Walleye. Any insight?

Colors seem to change every year and it all depends on where your fishing and what the fish are used to seeing. Over my 40 plus years of chasing walleye on lake erie....things change...certain colors are staples, but when things get trickey, you need to experiment.

    Bypass oil injection 2000 90ELPTO

Good to know, my last OMC motor was from 1988 and it did not work reliabily, so mechanic showed me how to bypass it. Motor did not idle well after. Had two that were problems, enough for me.
