90 evinrude wont idle or rev in water but it didn't on muffs

was the motor running before? if it was sitting a while, that ring could just be stuck and might free up with some Seafoam or MMO left in the cylinder a while, like a long while, a few days or more.

    1973 4hp Evinrude

a bit of research, says this might be a fuel problem. it didn't act like I've seen with loose gas line fittings or sucking air, maybe a pickup tube in the tank. fuel pump is new. I have a chance to test the tank on a couple motors this weekend, and go over it in more detail if needed.

    1968 3hp Johnson

packed this in the auto to bring on vacation with the tank. It might run OK at higher speed with the 4hp carb, and not sure that is such a great idea to do much, but at the camp I have a 3hp Evinrude of the same year, so - I can also test the tank, and swap the good running carb off it onto the...

    Aluminum Hull Straighness?

sold to me new. so, lifetime manufacturor's warranty on the hull. I'll find out what the dealer says. as they say, can't hurt to ask. I haven't sent those pics yet, they said someone would contact me, but if they don't I'll just email those pics to the sales guy I worked with and go from...

    Aluminum Hull Straighness?

from square in the front and back, the tilt on the trailer does not matter, the boat has to be aligned to itself, if you spin it, the dimenstions don't change, so - as long as I'm square in the front and back, it should be symmetrical, no? can see port, left from rear, seat in the back...

    Older Carb Experiences

true. it is not a complicated job to break one down and clean it. Just ran into a stuck nozzle. don't want to bugger the threads in the carb body, and ruin it. should be a good carb I can run, if I can get that nozzle out and replace it.

    Older Carb Experiences

I've been through a few. They end up working good, but getting there, run into a few things here and there. Basically, my approach is get them cleaned up, pretty good, back on the motor and run the motor. The motor may have other issues, so - that is a good run test. Done this more than a...

    1968 3hp Johnson

I did some checking with a volt/ohm meter and didn't like the resistance on one coil I had my eye on anyway. swapped that out. still seemed to be cutting in and out on one cylinder, but after messing with it - only when I try to throttle it down, will seem to run full power and the lower the...

    1968 3hp Johnson

I messed with this for a bit. I wasn't sure what to do with the carbs I had apart, a 3hp that I bungled the threads for one of the needles and cracked the main jet fitting inside trying to get it out, one of the ends the screw driver fits in broke off. So, not sure what to do there, that would...

    Aluminum Hull Straighness?

I thought about that. I probably should measure it diagnal and see what comes back. Then I have more to go on than, well gee, it looks a bit off to me. oh, I set up the trailer for the boat, and angled the bunks to the hull, with the boat sitting on it. still seems off.

is there a way to clean up the threads for the needles? is that a hardware store item I can just grab?

    Aluminum Hull Straighness?

I recently picked up a new 2022 Starcraft 14" Aluminum utility boat to use for fishing. When I was trailering it home I kind of noticed one end of the transom seemed a bit higher than the other, but figured maybe it was how it was trailered. When I had more time, I eyed it up, and looking from...

    1968 3hp Johnson

ran this a couple days ago on a 14 foot aluminum, seemed to start and run fine, but did not come up to full RPM, it was slugging and seemed to only run at about 1/2 speed. I tried to clean up the carb real quick, but I was in a hurry and goofed it up. I think I maybe poked the threads on the...

    1973 4hp Evinrude

I got this motor out and on a 14 foot aluminum, seemed to run decent, weird, but decent. started hard, just too many pulls to be normal, but it starts eventually. Got it started, had to dial the jets a bit, and then it really came up to speed. I would say running properly, changing speeds, up...

    1993 Johnson 4hp deluxe

that motor is lucky, for someone new at fixing outboards you sound like you went over it and checked it out really nicely.

    Reed Valves

you have fuel, but it is getting to the cylinder? when it won't start and you've been cranking it, are the plugs wet? a few times I had this situation where I knew I had, spark, compression, and fuel, and it turned out I forgot to flip the kill switch when I actually was trying to start it...

    Murphy's law

fuel stabilizer may have helped. I've seen a can of mixed gas go more than a few years and work fine. uhh .. it must still just evaporate out though and turn to gum. just drain it, now that you know. I always thought just running them dry was good enough, guess not always.

Confused? Voltage Regulator vs Rectifier; Tach & Charging

I've seen different motors some with separate regulator rectifier, some combined. rectifier converts AC to DC for the battery, and a regulator just cuts the max voltage to like 14.4 Volts so you don't overcharge the battery. to test the regulator just put a voltmeter on the battery when the...

    Johnson stops dead!

I'd be looking at ignition switches, kill switches, anything with an electrical contact that could be failing, or look for frayed wires, loose wires. I wouldn't be to ambitious to pull the flywheel if you don't have to. for testing you could also figure out how to bypass switches just to test...

Going from 25 hp to 35 hp

I'll add that to the list of ideas I've had that aren't any good. Lots of ideas, but some of them are stinkers. Curiousity killed the cat kind of thing.
