    Heating Johnson

well i contend "high octane" to a point can only help high thermal loads on a heavy crossflow piston, but also agree they can run just fine on 89 given the timing isnt over 24 degrees or so. the thermostats and poppet valves MUST be fit for service one these, as well as a new impeller and...

Gearcase compatibility - V4 Crossflow question

right. done. new gearcase on. flywheel turns like a fluffy pillow. cheers racer.

    8hp Evinrude running poorly.

no if the plug wire was allowed to arc, it shouldnt damage the coil. Especially if its not doing that when running its fine im sure.

Gearcase compatibility - V4 Crossflow question

im sure bolting it up to torque was not bright. then again, ive done dumber things!

    1970 4hp Johnson low compression

thats what I thought, but had 2 in a row that were under-lubricated. I guess by underlubricated it must have been a "zero oil" situation. I stand corrected.

Flywheel is easy to spin without spark plugs

maybe he meant it was flooded and thus hydro-locked. only way to do that would be to hook up the pump pulse line backwards i reckon.

    8hp Evinrude running poorly.

if you see 200v at the primaries with a coil extender, there is nothing wrong with the ignition. if a coil was shot, 9/10 youd hear it zapping to ground. exhaust cover is not underneath powerhead. port side where the indicator hose enters the block. that thing with a bunch of screws is what you...

Gearcase compatibility - V4 Crossflow question

thanks great info much appreciated. The splines are 100% the same as Racer mentioned which is why i bolted it up, stupidly not measuring the driveshaft lenght. its a long story why that happened :)

Gearcase compatibility - V4 Crossflow question

id bet dollars to donuts it will. correct case going on soon. I hope i didnt jam the splines up into the crank. that was not my smartest move.

    Oil mix ratio

its almost funny as the pistons/rings are fine even at 100:1. its just the bearings that all that oil is needed!

    8hp Evinrude running poorly.

symptoms would be hard to start when warm, poor idle, rough idle, maybe an occasional pop, but will seem to run ok at higher rpms. Again hopefully not the case. You should be able to just look down the cylinders at the exhaust side especially to see any scoring. the exhaust cover would be better...

    Johnson 112 vs 90 questions..

the rings, in my opinion, are more broken in then they ever will be after just 6 gallons of gas or so. lots of on-off throttle and stay away from prolonged low speed operation. the 112 and 90 are almost identical... until you hit 4500rpm or so. then the 110-115 (bubbleback) really walks on the...

    93 Johson 150hp fuel issue

these carbs are very easy to rebuild, but you do need a torque wrench in in/lbs. plastic and anything over 50 in/lbs or so can be a disaster so go slow when re-installing and make triple sure the o-rings arent rolled. i put a tiny bit of grease on them if they are stubborn but 80% of the time...

    8hp Evinrude running poorly.

this reeks of shot piston skirts to me. compression has nothing to do with it. Hope i'm wrong, but the issue with not being able to idle below 950rpm is a dead giveaway. these things should idle down in neutral a few hundered rpm lower than that without stalling. did you try squirting mixed...

88 Evinrude 48 spl flywheel rub

did someone maybe hit the flywheel with a hammer at some point? that would be the most logical, although the starter would likely bind with the flywheel...

    1970 4hp Johnson low compression

just remember these needed 25:1 oil mix with the bronze bearings. ive seen many of these with thrown rods from melted bearings due to improper fuel mix.

very cool carb and intake manifold causing moisture

but an aircraft experiences extreme temp differences. much more than a motor at sea level. ive never heard of an outboard carb icing over ever, but im sure its possible in some weird situation. id think the heat from the motor under the cowling would make this impossible, however.

    johnson 150 Low Rpm

these 60 degree motors do not like a bad OMS pump diaphragm. they can do some strange things. ditto for the optical sensor/pack combo. Ive had a few that seemed to be fuel related, but was ignition.

Gearcase compatibility - V4 Crossflow question

Anyone know if its ok to use a 1991 and up lower on a 1989 v4 crossflow? Ive got a gt100 (1989) and a 1993 88spl with a good lower. The driveshafts are different, but I bolted up the 88 spl to the GT100 and it seemed to go toghether fine, but hope the newer gearcase isnt a tad bit longer as i...

    1991 Evinrude 60hp VRO - Won't Idle

its going to be near impossible to set the idle speed/low speed jets correctly when its severely running too rich of an oil mix.
