Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

I figured because the paint was chipping off the bolts it meant they've had a wrench on them. But I am here to get feedback, so you think that is just normal paint chipping?

Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

Thanks, some really great information for me to leverage here. Much appreciated. Here are some pictures of the bolts current condition. They definitely look like they have been removed in the past.

Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

No I'm talking about the cylinder head cover I need to remove to get to the thermostat. 14 bolts. The three bolts I broke getting off the lower unit I got out fairly easy with vice grips.

No I haven't started the job yet, just debating if I should. 14 bolts!

Opinions needed - Risk of Changing Thermostat

I have a 1987 50hp Evinrude. E50TLCUD. At operating temperature the head reads about 140 degrees max. The pee flow is pretty much constant, doesn't change, cold, warm, hot, doesn't matter. This motor has a history of brackish water, and getting the lower unit bolts off, I snapped three of the...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

Yes good point on the throttle. I had to adjust it a few times to get it firm otherwise it wasn't pulling the idle timing screw back into position. I disabled the charging system as it's no longer needed. I completely removed the rectifier, disconnected the stator, and the Pr/R and Gy wires...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

Just an update, after three blissful days of fishing with no issues, the rough start when warm problem came back. Pulled the primer hose and could see it was not producing fuel, turned the red knob and started right up. When I got home I removed the amazon primer solenoid and used the O ring...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

Yep that's why I disabled the charging system. Removed the rectifier and disconnected the stator and disconnected the charging loop. These new batteries have a flat discharge curve, the voltage stays mostly constant until it has nothing left and then it drops off a cliff. This one I got even has...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

I went into this weekend with two objectives: verify the stator is bad with a different meter and verify the primer solenoid is functioning as intended. After thinking it over, I chose a different route. I knew the stator would cost about 110 to rebuild, and a battery is about the same. Also...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

I have a close friend that frequents estate sales and have put this on my list for him to keep an eye out for.

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

Yeah I made a mistake testing the charge coil and replaced that when I did not need to a few months ago. I need to get a simple analog tester that a guy like me can understand.

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

It looks like I have another part to pull and examine this weekend. The stator tested bad. Going to borrow another meter from a friend to confirm. It doesn't look like something that is likely to be broken, but if it is I have a ton of questions I will need help with. I can see voltage on my...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

Crank seals are low on my list. When I first got the motor it was literally spraying fuel out of the primer valve it so I replaced with with an Amazon special...but I kept the original. I did not know any better. Before I even mess with it I will see if I can recreate the condition and see what...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

I use them. Just saying for serious diagnostics that require load similar to that of being in the water, using the muffs can skew the results and leads to false diagnostics. If ya'll going to get nitpicky over every little statement then that's your time to spend, I guess.

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

The handful of times I thought something was fine in the driveway only to be dissapointed at the ramp tell me otherwise. I'll happily swap 20 minutes of prepping the test tank versus 2 hours back and forth to the ramp. I've taken apart the fuel pump and inspected it awhile ago, one of the first...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

It's just a matter of ruling stuff out. I've now ruled out the carbs and entire ignition system. I'm thinking if I can find out the ideal starting RPMs I can test that and rule out the starter and battery. If I squeeze the bulb that doesn't rule out the pump, it could just be compensating for a...

87 50HP VRO Evinrude - Could this be my problem?

Ok guys I finally have a solid clue to what the problem is with the hard starting, now I just need to chase down the solution. Here is what I found: Last time I used the boat I charged the battery when I got home. Then it sat for two weeks not on the charger. Note this is a new battery...

    Starter Motor Disengages too soon

Grizznbow if you're still around, and remember what you did over ten years ago, I'd like to hear more about this treatment you did to the cylinder using fuel injector cleaner.
