Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

Oeps…. That’s a scenario i didnt think yet of. When I removed the stern I installed a new exhaust rubber. Didn’t see anything abnormal then. But will see what I can find I know about the costs but I’m just starting to doubt if The engine is worth it.😒

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

Found the location. Easiest was to remove the riser. I see a leftover tiny shaft but no more flapper. So this one is gone... This engine is having some issues.... But I will first focus on getting the engine to run when its in the water with the back pressure issue. Don't want to keep spending...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

Hi, I understand now what dwell really is. I don’t have a dwell meter. But could I start with using the feeler gauge to set the gap? And then set the timing (timing device is on order)

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

Oh… I don’t know where this part would be located… (never seen before) Will check engine block number, perhaps it’s a 160. I have this part https://www.marineengine.com/newparts/part_details.php?pnum=MER76351A04 and this is on one side connected to the exhaust manifold and other side to a...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

Hi, yes the wiring is sorted out. I added the necessary ballast resistor and this gives about 9V to the coil while running. So this part seems to be solved. Now focus will go to the points.

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

Hi, My feeler gauges and timing tool will arrive next week. I had a look at the points you mentioned. Of course it’s only a visual check and also grinded a bit the points. Do I understand correctly that the points can make the difference between running fine out of the water versus bad in the...

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

I also read about "flappers" but to my knowledge this setup doenst have this. Mercruiser 165 6cyl with an MC-sterndrive. I do not have a vacuum gauge, but I expect this can not be expensive to get. Where and what vacuum would you measure?

And currently I have an electric fuel pump in the boat. Supplies sufficient fuel flow

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

Hi Scott, I mean I’m 99.9% there is enough fuel inside the carb reservoir. But feels like the vacuum created by the engine to draw fuel from the carb jets is not sufficient once the stern is submerged. As soon as I lift the boat back out of the water the engine can run fine again. Did...

Mercruiser 165 6cyl inline dies when boat is in the water

I narrowed my problem down to a fuel issue. As long as my boat is out of the water the engine runs smooth. Low revs and high revs. All seems fine as far my knowledge goes Once the boat gets in the water (sterndrive submerged) the engine dies due to lack of fuel. When I manually add fuel in the...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

On the positive side of the coil are 2 brown wires. One was connected directly to the key-switch with some type of fuse in between that also gave a voltage drop. Fuse is removed. Other brown wire is not going anywhere. I see a purple wire that has been cut lose and I guess this one is the...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

What Ballast resitor would you suggest? 1.2ohm or 1.5ohm? A resitor wire is missing

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

OK, so even during runing of the engine when alternator kick's in it should be still around 8-9Volts! I need to find this voltage drop I have somewhere and what it is

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

I fixed the issue of the dropping voltage when cranking. For some reason the wire between the Positive Coil and the "R" on the starter motor was missing. Now when starting the engine I get "battery voltage" on the coil. The "resitor wire" is still unlcear. Something is not right. They seemed to...

Mercruiser dies after getting on temp

Ok, Thanks for all the input. First data: I did run the engine out of the water until now it does not die even after 25min. Will try more and on water. 1. when I put the key to "on" I get about 8.8V on the + of the coil. When I start the engine it briefly drops to about 6-7V. So I guess the...
