Need help to id the motor

I found some pics on Web of 1989 and 1990 motors that look the same... It will need detailed check after compression test for sure. If compression is good then there are options, if bad - it is parts motor. But, knowing the year\model really helps with parts.

Need info for 1961 5.5 HP Johnson CD-18

So far motor works well. The only complain is it smokes more than usual. I tried to run it on 50:1 mix instead of 25:1 and it was still some smoke, but less. What else can I do? Also, does this motor have timing markings for strobe light? Can not find any... Thanks.

Compression is 105\110. Took flywheel off, everything looks perfect. One coil was definitely replaced, points look new. I made sure point gap is .02''. Put two new plugs Champ J4C with .035'' gap. (CAN ANYONE CONFIRM OEM RECOMMENDED PLUGS AND GAP FOR THIS MOTOR?) Got strong blue sparks...

Need info for 1961 5.5 HP Johnson CD-18

Hello, I just got this motor in very nice condition, but it does need good tune up. This is first OMC I got older then 1967. All manuals I have start with 1965. I did some web searching, but found details that differ. Can anyone confirm if the info I have is correct? 1. Spark plug : Champ J4J...

    1979 85 HP Johnson V4 blows fuses

I was down sick for a while and now got back to this problem. I disconnected red plug and connected spare RC. Fuse blew after a few starts, so it was not a key switch. By playing with it I found that pushing in for choke causes the fuse to blow. I removed choke solenoid and connected voltmeter...

    1979 85 HP Johnson V4 blows fuses

I have exactly the same RC from spare 50HP, so I will disconnect it at the red plug and reconnect just a new RC plug to make sure short is not on the engine itself. Then I will try to see if it CHOKE or START that blows it. Then I can even swap the switches (I have a wild guess that it will be...

    1979 85 HP Johnson V4 blows fuses

Hello, I took my boat to the lake today first time after the winter. Before that I started motor (85ML79R) with muffs and it ran fine. Spent a few hours on the lake and it worked fine. I was getting 30 mph max instead of 34 mph as last season, so I decided to run it again when I got back home...

    1979 5 HP Mariner question

I disassembled it again, filed and cleaned points, checked every wire, put everything back. One thing I also did: put electric tape over worn grommet where HT lead goes to coil to prevent it from moving and leakage. Got nice blue spark! Motor starts with one pull. Ran it in the tank and adjusted...

    1979 5 HP Mariner question

Spark plug is new NGK B7HS. All gaps checked to specs above. When it did not start after a few pulls I suspected fuel issue because I knew spark was there. I injected fuel into cylinder manually and it was not even sneeze. So, it is "no spark" issue and the question is if coil died or something...

1971 25 HP Prop Shaft Seal replacement question

Hello, I am re-building LU that was taking water. It was leaking everywhere initially. I did "everything" and tried pressure test in the water. It is still leaking air in prop shaft seal. This whole GEAR HEAD assembly is $221, but there is inner seal for $16, so I want to replace it. The part I...
