What type transom straps do you prefer

My previous boat had the 2" retractable straps, direct from the factory on the new boat trailer package. Mine were a different brand but same idea. Worked great when new. I only do fresh water, but after a year of in/out, they bound up and would no longer retract. Impossible to take apart, so...

Buying a US boat and bringing back to Canada

You may want to call the border office where you plan to cross, just to confirm your plan,, in case things have changed. You may need to send them paperwork before hand for a heads up, but I didn't do anything extra. I did this a few years ago, Montana to Alberta. When driving across the...

Which States/Provinces Enforce Registration Numbers Requirements

North of the border is a free federal registration. Here in Alberta, going back to 2008, my last 2 new boats had custom letters. They were 3" but not in block form. The last one had 2-tone colors with a shadow effect, matching the boat graphics. Also ran one boat without numbers for the first 2...

60 hp EFI Loses Power and Runs Rough

The most logical thing to do is take it back to the marina?? You paid them $1000 for a problem they didn't fix.

    replacing tires

I always lift via the axle, like others have said, right by the spring mount. Use jack stands, block of wood, etc. and let sit like that while you swap out the rubber. Lifting by the axle, you only lift 1-2" off the ground. If you lifted the frame, it may take 6" before the tire made it off the...

    Size of outboard

I have a Starcraft Stealth 16'. The tag rates it for max 90hp. It has a Merc 60hp 4 stroke and moves along quite nice. No problems with holeshot, planing or speed. I usually cruise around 23-25mph. WOT is 33mph.

Repair Manual for newer MerCruiser 4.5L 250hp

Good luck changing the thermostat. Depending on your engine compartment, it may not be as simple as you think. On the 4.5L, the thermostat is at the back of engine. Behind/below the air intake screen.

    Boat Ramp Etiquette

We use the rule, that the truck/trailer is the order for using the ramp. The boat on the water has nothing to do with it. If you're by yourself, you need to figure out how to tie up the boat, anchor it, beach it, what ever works so you can get your trailer. And not leave it at the dock so it...

    trailer manufacturer picks?

I'm a fresh water guy and for the last 20+ years my trailers were always steel painted. Stored in garage. They were new and never had mechanical issues, only cosmetics. Within a couple years, it seems they would get a little scratch, little paint blister, and before you know it, I'd be touching...

My Boat capsized and asking help in figuring where the water came in!

I learned this just the other day. Had a great idea, lets turn up this inlet valve for higher flow. Several minutes later noticed the water level higher than the exhaust pipe since it could not keep up to the circulation. If not adjusted back, it could easily start filling the boat

Merc Outboard - 2 Year Old Engine Failure, 5 Year Extended Warranty Denied

FWIW, I like to add oil into the cylinder when doing the winterization. With the plugs out, it shouldn't matter how you spin the engine. However, as per my Merc paperwork, "turn engine over manually". I would have a problem with the original denial, I still don't see proof of water ingestion...

    Gear lube for 60 HP

I was going to order a jug of gear lube and see that Premium is the recommended type. The first 3 seasons, the engine was serviced by the dealer, and just noticed the work order reads HP. If the HP is a better version of the premium, great. I just find it weird they don't put in the...

    Gear lube for 60 HP

I have a 2018 60hp. I'm looking at what type of gear oil. Manual has real good how to instructions, but that is the one spec # that is missing. According to Merc online shopping, it says to use Premium for anything 75hp and under. Use HP for any outboard over 75hp. Mine has the HP in the case...

    Rec gas prices???

I'm not worried about the boat fuel, my Merc 60 HP runs a long time on 5 gallons. It's all the other stuff, $400/month for the house, $7/gal for vehicle fuel, not so good. Couple days ago it was $1.70/L X 3.78 = $6.42/US gal. I don't want to look today.

Upgrading boat? - Boat buying advice

I too had a Glastron GTS185 with the Merc 4.5L. Was a great boat. I thought it handled quite well on our smaller inland lakes. The only way you're getting a better ride is get something bigger and heavier. Any boat 18.5' long and 2500# range, it will feel the chop much more than a bigger one. I...

Fluid Changes for Winterizing, Do I Need to?

I do agree on changing the engine oil before winter storage even though it had low hour usage. Once per year. What I don't understand on why to change the gear case fluid every year. How is it different than a truck, you don't change the diff fluid for years and thousands of miles. The truck is...

    Oil filter for Merc 60HP

I have a 2018 60HP 4 stroke and need help with filter. The OE part # is 35-8M0162829. There was an update quite a while back, and the old number is 8M0065104. After looking at a couple filters, new in the box, they are quite different (see pic below). Visually the base plate and flow holes...

    Towing with/without Overdrive

For me, it all depends on the weight of the trailer load. The boat is in that 2000-2500 range so it doesn't matter. However when pulling my enclosed sled trailer, sometimes tow mode, or I lock out 9 & 10th which are the OD gears. Also in tow mode, the tranny senses slowing down so it down shifts...
