28' Pontoon with 3.0 Mercruiser Prop

Hey all, I have a 1989 Harris 28' pontoon with 3.0 mercruiser. Current prop is 15 1/2 X 15 stainless. Seems like the recommendation is to stuck with aluminum props on mercruisers from what others have told me. The previous owners had switched to this prop because he damaged the aluminum one...

    1989 Johnson power tilt/trim

I figured that would definitely happen. I was just hoping someone who had done one before would look at the pictures and give me some tips/warnings of things to look for. Not sure if you noticed that the previous owner decided to disassemble the motor as well (face place with brushes removed)...

By "rebuild kit" I assume you are referring to the o-ring/seal replacement kit??

    1989 Johnson power tilt/trim

Hey all, Just got me a new project (pictured below). 1989 Bass Tracker Tournament TX17 with a 50 horse Johnson. Motor has 117 and 119 compression and fires up easy and sounds good - just needs impeller as it's not moving water. Boat has a couple of wiring issues and needs cleaned up as well as...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Well, all good news this morning I think. Got the alignment tool in last night and aligned the motor. Took quite a while for me as I had to lower the front a lot more than it had previously been and I was starting to question whether I was doing things right. Outdrive took me a while to get back...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

I guess for parts, one would hope that they could just replace seals and bearings once a seal failure has occurred if they have caught the issue before any gear damage has happened.

    Fish finders

I certainly don't have the money for FFS...hell, I'm still trying to learn to use the 20 year old fish finders. That said, I actually go fishing with hopes of putting fish in the freezer AS WELL as having a good time and enjoying the lake with friends and family. My buddy and I caught a 37 pound...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

I have access to and can run anything in our machine shop at work (I was the only 'machinist' for 4 months while our machinist was out for shoulder surgery). Is there some place I could find drawings for the specific mercruiser tools that would be more cost-effective to make than buy? Once...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

These are my issues as well. I've never been good at throwing stuff away I could fix... but that's also how I ended up with so much crap I need to fix!! lol I actually enjoy getting back into working on boats (and other stuff), so I may want to get the specialty tools so I have them for working...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Excluding the ending, I can relate and one of my best friends right now lives in this world every day hoping he can change her... Sorry you had to endure that. Hope your daughter was not too terribly scarred by all that.

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

I'm hoping so! I'm gonna follow the advice of @Bondo and run a little and recheck several times to make sure I'm not getting water in the gear box. The oil I drained wasn't milky, but it was fairly dirty and certainly hadn't been changed or checked probably in years. This motor coupler has...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Something tells me the details of this story are rather entertaining...lol

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Well, good news is I made a makeshift pressure tester using my combo tire inflator/gage and the cheap hose and plastic fitting for filling lower unit. Even with the very suspect connections it held 15 pounds of pressure for 10 minutes. Not sure why the previous owners only had it half full of...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Trying to figure out the pressure tester (fairly simply leak down check basically). Trying to find the thread pitch for the drain plug and didn't see it listed in the post shared earlier. Went to the homemade tools section and the top 2 links for pressure testers are both not good. First one...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Ahh..ok. on the bright side, if the other boat i bought proves to be shot as far as the hull goes, I have a full motor and drive in it that should basically be identical to this one and I only paid $500 for the whole setup. Outdrive on it feels really solid. Of course I won't know for sure until...

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

So, assuming I put oil in it tonight and it doesn't leak or has a VERY mild leak...would you feel safe running it for a few more weekends before winterizing the boat and then pull and rebuild over the winter?

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

Why an SEI drive? Edit: I guess I should ask what an SEI drive is as well? (Cautiously watching for my ignorance punishment to begin...)

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

On the bright side, I got the motor back in the boat last night and got it aligned as best as I can eyeballing it. My alignment tool should be here tomorrow to make the final adjustments. Here's to hoping I won't be seeing the bilge like this again for a very long time...😁

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

I noticed as well, but it didn't feel rough/pitted. I think it may just be some tarnish or even bacteria/mold from sitting with some moisture in it? I will try to get better pictures tonight and verify further.

    Mercruiser 3.0 won't "lock in"

I eventually found the torque spec. They looked to be grade 8 to me, but I didn't check numbers on them honestly. Thanks for finding the other link! I'll check it out and see what I can do on that.
