    Modern PT lumber

We salvaged a number of 6x6 and 8x8 timbers from a timber frame barn they torn down on the property behind us. Took pegs and all. Make great rustic fireplace mantles. Gave away three. Have two left out in the barn. Don’t know what for, but I have a couple if the need comes up in the next 25...

    Modern PT lumber

Chestnut was the wood of choice for (colonial) ship builders because of its resistance to rot. Grew up in a two story, chestnut log house built in the late 1700’s. My mother donated the house to the State for use at a local historical site when she built her new home on the property in 2016...

Are you sure about that? You could turn it off on the 2025 Camry I rented a couple of weeks ago.

    1988 Johnson 70hp inspection

Bored a couple of cylinder jugs on a lathe w/4 jaw chuck, but no engine blocks. A block would take forever to set up properly on that Bridgeport. Much better off using a mill designed specifically for engine work.

    Modern PT lumber

What kind of wood? Makes a world of a difference Our four board fence was installed circa 1985. Has 6"-8" Southern Pine post (PT) and 5/4 x 6" PT poplar boards. Had a replace a couple posts out of the 150 or so installed. Just finished replacing the 5/4" Poplar with 5/4" Oak this Spring...

    Modern PT lumber

You will not find it in big box stores, but a large maritime market combined with our proximity to the heart of yellow pine industry, makes it readily available in local lumber yards.

    Modern PT lumber

You can still get CCA treated but it’s not for residential work. MCA treat is the next best thing but more expensive. Other grades that are available are explained here… https://clp-inc.com/what-is-micronized-copper-azole/

1988 Johnson 70hp - VRO or not to VRO?

Going on year 28 with my second "VRO" pump. Put 1,000 to 1,200 gallons fuel and oil a year thru the system w/o incidence. I would rather/easier keep the 3 gallon oil tank full than premix 150 gallons of fuel every time I fill up.

Converting Roller trailer to bunks for my Starcraft 161

Strength comes from the cross section perpendicular to the load. Laid flat, a 2x6 and a 2x8 have the same cross section perpendicular to the load. A 2x4 stood on end (4”) would be stronger than either

Converting Roller trailer to bunks for my Starcraft 161

The trailer structure and cross members are the same on roller and bunk Loadrites. The difference is the support structure. Just need to figure out what size u bolts fit the cross members and what size (height) vertical bunk brackets you need. Might be able to use the existing bunk support...

    Cars you should have kept.

Ended up staring out the windshield at a creek bed in one of those. Too much partying. Went field hopping in hood height weeds at 2 am. Ended up standing it on the grill in a 4’ drop to a creek bed. A 45 minute walk back to the house and a 3 am call to a buddy with a F250 saved the day...

How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

Have gotten a chance to work with some interesting developmental metals over the years. Some of the UHSS steel alloys developed for automotive applications have crazy weight to strength ratios Interesting note….the original “7075 alloy” was developed by the Japanese for use in the Japanese...

How do you screw into fiberglass/gelcoat without chipping?

3003 is commercially pure aluminum. 1XXX series is “pure” aluminum, 99% or better. Not much above butter …lol Did a project with Kaiser Aluminum - Spokane a number of years ago. At that time, they were using 7075 for the skin of the 747. It’s my understand that 7050 is more widely used at this...
