3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

Good point, I don't know when Merc/OMC switched from the 2.5 liter to the 3.0 liter but the Cobra started in 1986. Not sure if they ever used a 3.0 with the older Stringer drives. Checked, the use of the 3.0 goes back to at least 1982, before that they are listed as a 120 hp and 140, guessing...

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

I think what we need to know is this: are you putting the formerly OMC engine in a Merc boat with all Merc rigging? or putting the Merc drivetrain, etc, in a formerly OMC boat that still has OMC rigging? Because the one thing I do know about that is the control has to be reversed (FWD/REV). So...

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

One of these days, when I can no longer get Cobra parts or can't get someone to do the drive work I can't do (never needed that yet, the most involved Cobra repairs I have done were the water pump adapter, trim rod seals and steering actuator) I could see myself converting my boat over to Merc...

3.0 omc engine mating to mercruiser outdrive

I don't know for sure what's involved but you'd have to strip off all the OMC rigging and replace it with the Merc, such as the bellhousing, probably the front engine mount, exhaust system, shift linkages, and control. Not sure about the engine wiring harness. I think the direction of the...

    My block is drained, right?

While cracked intakes is definitely a possibility in causing water in the oil, one other problem that affected both the V6 and V8 Vortec engines were bad intake gaskets, this was a big deal for GM, I don't know how long it took them to improve them, but it was a problem for many car/truck and...

OMC 4.3 V6 dry joint "batwing" conversion exhaust kit

OK the only manufacturer who lists dimensions is GLM. I know there were quality issues with them in the past but this is just informational, so here's dimensions I got for the Merc Dry Joint V6, and the OMC and Volvo wet joint... The OMC and Volvo are identical...what I get from this is that...

Why do V8 boat engine have so many cooling system parts ? Compared to a basic V 8 car engine ?

Well there are a few... 1) improvements, Merc came up with the warm manifolds system which reduces condensation in the exhaust system but adds hoses 2) convenience, single point drain adds a lot of extra hoses and fittings, but to me is not an improvement, because they can clog due to rust...

OMC 4.3 V6 dry joint "batwing" conversion exhaust kit

ok did some more thinking on this, there may be 2 dimensions that are important, the one I just mentioned and also, from the 90* down pipes to where the hose for them ends up on the end of the elbow.... I took a pic of a turn key Volvo engine from Michigan Motorz website to illustrate...

OMC 4.3 V6 dry joint "batwing" conversion exhaust kit

I think the important thing is actually this: the total height of the manifold/elbow assembly above the level of the mounting bolt holes in the cyl head, because even if the elbow for the dry joint is the same height as the wet joint, if the manifold height is different where it mounts to the...

    My block is drained, right?

I'll have to look around. It was an OMC TSB IIRC and Volvo also picked it up, they actually used OMC shop manuals during the joint venture era that were a lot better than Volvo manuals lol. I think it may be like this, if the engine isn't level, or not tilted down in the front, it may be...

    1989 OMC Cobra exhaust seal

See if you can work it free IIRC mine is like that too, one side moves easily the other not as much but I’ve never had water come up the exhaust & I’ve owned this boat for 23 years!

    My block is drained, right?

Not sure what they changed when they went to the Vortec heads and manifolds, but yes this has to be drained and there was actually a TSB put out indicating that. On my old pre-Vortec, the manifold just drains with the cyl heads....if I had to guess, it might be that since they had eliminated the...

    Fuel starvation conundrum

I recall seeing the Project Farm guy and one of the other small engine guys on you tube (Teradactyl with the fake teeth lol) doing that when testing stabilizers. I think it would burn because the engine always started right up like always. Starts, idles, and revs in neutral. But wouldn't plane...
