A few years back my wife and I both contracted for cremation services. We already owned several burial plots if needed for either us or grown children. No funeral and a simple graveside service with a prayer only no honor guard, bugle, or salute. I have attended some for some of my also retired shipmates and yes I realize full military burials are impressive and mean a lot to some families.
My father a war veteran and wanted military honors. He was cremated and his ashes were interred at Washington crossing national military cemetery. We paid for the cremation but everything from there on was free, full military honors, columbarium niche where his urn was placed along with my mothers. Name, rank, years served on his niche door. My mother’s ashes were placed with his. Her name is engraved as well. It’s First class operation.
I did keep some ashes I sprinkle in the woods where I hunt and the lake he liked to fish, still have some left. Not sure why I do, they are just ash a part of the man that once was.

As for me, I don’t care what they do with my carcass. I believe the second you die your soul goes wherever it was intended to go leaving just an empty vessel.

Be careful with that transfer on death. Can lead to arguments and hard feelings down the road. As long as all the siblings are on the same page, as to what to do with the property after transfer, ok. But if one wants to cash out, and one wants to live there but lacks the means to buy out the other...... trouble.

And check your tax laws as to what happens to the proceeds if/when they sell the house.

In simple terms, our lawyer advised that we leave the house in the estate, then liquidate the estate and divide proceeds per the will.
When there is a TOD, the house automatically transfers to the designated person…it’s a done deal so no arguments. Well, someone can argue but nothing will come of it. Neither of our sons will want to live here, so the house will be put on the market and proceeds split 50-50.
Here in VA, the house transfers with stepped up cost basis, so no concerns there.

I have told my wife, "I have eaten from the woods and fields all my life and those animals have been good to me. I am okay with you throwing me in the woods and let the animals have their turn to eat me. It's only fair!" She is not a fan of that idea ...

Very much so.

A childhood friend died in the line of service a couple of years out of high school. Had the honor of being asked to attend his full military burial at Arlington National. I was quite impressed as a 20 yro.

A feeling comes over you that can’t be explained when you step onto the fields of Arlington. Have been to a service there.

I am not sure my wife would wait until I am declared dead rather than just slow and feeble.

Not sure if it's all states but is in KY
You can use any casket and give it to Funeral home and they have to use it without extra cost. Can make it your self, buy in online, have it made, just has to me basic requirements. Don't want it falling apart when used or be unable to be carried

I'm in the country and many start family plots. Guy at food panty buried his wife in her flower garden

Friends of ours lost their son about 15 years ago. Arlington was extremely impressive and I remember tons of details like it was yesterday. The 21 gun salute…a blind person would swear it was one gun being fired three times. They were that precise.
