Looking for some insight
Currently own a 16’ Alumacraft deep v with prop outboard, recently find myself fishing rivers more than lakes/reservoirs. Bumped a few submerged rocks this season, luckily only damaged a prop so far. Thinking of making the switch to a 16’ Lowe modified v with a jet motor, wondering how well it would perform on the occasional big water trip especially in windy conditions & waves. Guessing not as well as the deep v, hope adequate enough to safely get home if wind blows up?

Back in the day, dad had a grumman 14W (obviously shorter than a 16) which was a wide 14 with a modified v. He enjoyed it on the south bay of long Island and is currently looking for another. It'll do good enough I'd think.

Welcome
Shallow waters are killers for jet drives, most recommend at least 2 feet of water under the hull to keep from sucking up something off the bottom

Thanks, I don’t run that shallow, the problem is the outcropping of rocks. There’s areas where you can be in 8’-10’ of water and suddenly there’s a single rock formation that rises almost to surface

Known fact: The flatter the hull, especially at the transom, the higher the boat will run on the water. If the water is big waves, then you are going to be bouncing around more if at any kind of speed.

Unknown assumption: I would imagine if the jet stays in the water, like if a prop stays in the water, then you should get your desired propulsion. With the hull riding more "on" the water then that would be more of a problem.

When I was actively involved in water activities, I had 2 boats, adapted to the situation where used.

Gee, how about installing a powered jack plate. It can lift the motor high up for those shallow spots and lower it down for the high speed deep water runs.

Jets are about 1/3 less efficient than props. For equivalent performance, you would need more power with a jet drive.

Depends in how big the waves will be. Have owned both over the years and used both on Lake Erie where waves can be flat to 3-4 ft high in a very short time if you not paying close attention. I generally stay away if waves get over two feet so in that situation either the deep or modified doesn't make much difference. In 3' plus waves the deep V will give a better ride where the mod V will be rough. Just the opposite when it is flat with little wind. The mod V is a little faster and will get up on plane quicker and actually use a little less fuel. The deep V creates more drag until your up on plane at wot. So....it all comes down to how it will be used and in what kind of conditions..

Hitting a rock formation with a prop lowe or a jet lower has the same result..... You are rowing home

A prop lower will transmit significantly more power than the jet lower

For big water, you want a deep vee. For wind, you want a deep vee

I realize a deep v would be best in the big water my problem is 80% of the time in the river . Just concerned about how mod v will perform in off chance of getting caught on bigger water when the wind blows up

Well sir, down here you can start out on a fishing trip in the morning and have near glass smooth water. As soon as the temperature starts rising, the wind out of the South picks up and you have 3' waves on the lake. Doesn't have to be a big lake. One local. lake is only 20 acres but lies N and S.

My family used to go to church in the morning and change to boating attire, swing by the fast food joint, get some gas, and go to the lake for an afternoon of water sports. Had to pick and choose where you played to have smooth enough water for some fun....course when it was time to go home, depending on where you were playing vs where you launched, the ride back to the dock was usually unpleasant.
