Anyone have the procedure to build and adjust the carb on a 1951 Evinrude 4423 5hp?

You have two needle valves, one on top (low speed) and one on the bottom(high speed).
Static settings:
Low speed = 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.
High speed = 3/4 tuen out from lightly seated.
Final adjustment should be made with the boat in the water.

The 4423 was a 3.3hp. Made from '47-'51. I have the original operators manual with basic carb set up in a pdf if you want to PM me your email address and request I'll send it along.

This carb is different and only has one needle on it for fuel mixture. There is a set screw for the low speed adjustment which controls airflow. I think I may have the fuel adjustments figured out, but now I have a problem with it running for a bit, then stalling, and fuel leaking out of the float needle

Sounds like it needs to be cleaned and inspected, float is probably shot.

Maybe. It looks like it's sticking somehow. But it may be possible that it's fuel soaked.

Yes, 4423 is a 3.3 horsepower 1947-51 Sportwin.

If the float is shot, you can modify a Mercury float to work. Part number 18-7208, here at iboats.

The float valve has no separate seat. If the seat is bad, you have a problem.

I guess I don't have to tell you what a monster that carburetor is. Good Luck. You are going to need it.

F_R- what carb did they use, was it a tillotson? I tried looking up parts to no avail.

Made by Evinrude. I haven't counted them, but maybe more parts in the carburetor than the whole rest of the powerhead.

Very "tillotson" like however on the tillotson you could change the seat.

This is not the adjustment req'd for this carb ^^^^^. If you look a few posts up, there is a pic of the carb I have. Thanks for trying though.
