1968 Johnson 33HP - Model:RXE-16M Restoration Project

I am restoring a 1968 Johnson 33 Model RXE-16M as part of my self-learning of small outboard repairs. I'm looking for resources and/or guidance. I promise to do the work, just looking for experienced people to point me in the right direction. Right now I am looking to gather resources so I can familiarize myself with the project.


Questions:

1. On the Crowley website they offer the Seloc Marine Repair Manual 1301: Johnson Evinrude 1-4 Cylinder Outboards 1958-1972 manual 55$ USD. Is this necessary?
   
2. I see the 1968 Johnson 33 hp Outboard Motor Service repair Manual on Ebay. Would this manual provide better value?
   
   
3. Does anyone have pictures of this motor or resources they would be willing to share? My email is louhauteclocque@gmail.com. I've also been scouring the forums for good pics.
   
   
4. Is it possible to test compression with the motor in such a state? I've only ever tested compression on a motor that had it's electrical system intact.
   

Motor History
None. The owner bought it decades ago and said he never got around to doing anything. He lost interest and went to cars, but he said it could be restored. I can see the motor electrical wiring has been gutted, but other than that the flywheel turns, and the parts all seem to be OEM. The electrical and gas lines will all need to be changed.

These are an excellent motor.----Easy to repair / maintain.------Do a complete evaluation BEFORE spending beer tokens on parts.-----Do a compression test FIRST by pulling the recoil.----Post actual values here.---Does spark jump a gap of at least 1/4"-----Drain gear oil.-----Remove lower unit to inspect water pump and impeller.----Pull flywheel using the 3 threaded holes 1/4-20NC thread.-----Post picture of the coils.-----Get the 68 manual off E-bay.

Thank you for the information. The cylinders were a bit hard to pull on the pull chord. I added a bit of oil from my other johnson boat to lubricate the cylinders. This smoothed it out wonderfully, and I was able to take a proper compression test.

Both cylinders are 110.

I did the test twice. I will conduct the other tests shortly. Thanks for the start!
