G'day legends
It's gonna be winter in a couple months hear in the land of Oz so when the boat comes off the water for the season I wanted to start a project to do a full rebuild on my 1972 25hp evinrude
It's a great motor and my boat loves it as much as I do very basic simple motor
Im wounder if anyone has a beat on a full rebuild kit with gaskets rings washers seals bearings basicly a all in 1 kit or will I need to go through the parts list and order everything 1 part at a time
Iv added the module number picture and for anyone that was following my previous posts yes I thought it was a 1976 as I was tought the year was in the serial number but well doing reserch I referenced the model number and realised I was wrong

Post compression test values here first.-----These motors are really well built.----You may just need to reseal lower unit.----Carburetor kit.----New coils if it still has original.------Inspect first ?-----Lots of parts available new and used.

Main reason for the rebuild is a damaged piston the previous owner had the wrong spark plugs in and the end of the piston was bashing against the spark plug
But mostly just a winter project clean the old girl right up new paint job the whole kit and kabodle so I'll have a good motor for years to come at a low price

Yeah....
Nice spark plug. Your right, clean up the plug...re-gap it, re-install the head and drink some beer! Hahahaha!

Racerone, will walk you through it....I think he's part "Bushman".

I would just hone the cylinder, knurl the piston, change the rings, bolt it together and drive it like you stole it!😆🤣😆

If shipping wasn't so much I'd send you three!

Now we're coming up to summer, so time to start fishing!

They were the wrong spark plugs in there they were to long I swaped em out for the correct spark plugs awhile ago
Hit a log and the sudden jolt musta had just the right timing but the piston slamed the spark plug right outta the hole striped the thread lucky iv got the spare parts motor just straight swaped the piston head cover so I didn't have to retread the bastard
But piston has taken a beating

You can heli-coil the spark plug hole and make sure to true up the head with a super flat surface and a sheet of sandpaper. Figure 8 pattern will get you there.

Can you circle the damage on the piston that was caused by the long plug ?

Not sure if this was caused by the wrong spark plug being to long or what caused it but it definitely doesn't look right
The main dmg was caused when I hit a log on the river and the piston hit the spark plug hard enough to pop the spark plug out taking the thread from the head off
But I have fixed the thread problem the same day it happened by just straight swaping the piston cover off the spare parts motor
Can see the part I mean by 2 different paint jobs
Much easier than re threading
But im not sure if the damage to the end of the piston is causing problems or impending profomance

I have a couple of brand new 0.030" O/S pistons that have the same horseshoe shaped indent in them.

Do ya recon it's damage or just build up? Or do you mean brand new unused with the same bumps?
I have a 78 25hp rude not sure if pistons are compatible 76 being 22in cube 78 being 33in cube but the pistons on the 78 look clean with no indents

I do not see any clear damage to the piston.----And the 33 cube parts are totally different.----I have worked on more than 1 or 2 of these engines !

Setting the timing on a 1972 model Evinrude involves the breaker points.----They need to open at the correct time relative to the rotation of the flywheel ( magnets ) around the coils.-----Maximum and idle timing are not an issue on the 72 model 25 Evinrude.----Using a meter to set breaker points get the spark at exactly 180 degrees apart.----And at the correct time.
