My 1980 J70ELCSA started running at about 30% across the power band today, after running strong all summer. All afternoon today I tried all the regular stuff - disassembled and reassembled fuel pump - no change. Swapped with another fuel pump - no change. Tried different gas tank - no change...
I am replacing a timer base and stator on a 1980 70hp 3-cyl.
Removing the parts was no problem for me.
Are there any specific instructions for installing the new parts, other than reverse-order of removal?
Thanks

On my flywheel there are some dark marks about an inch long. Look like someone marked the magnet with a dark-brown sharpie. The marks won't wipe off.
I'm replacing 30-year-old stator and timer base. Stator has large crack in outer housing. I figure that may be what caused the black marks...
1980 70 hp J70ELCSA. If I replace the stator and timer base, can you tell me the procedure for getting the synchronizing / timing correct? Do I need special tools?

Question 1 - When the engine is running, unburned gas pours steadily out of the center carb. Is this a problem with the float, needle, and seat?
Question 2 - Does a carb repair kit have the necessary parts to fix this problem?
Thanks

In searching for a shop manual for my 1980 70 hp Johnson, the closest I found on iboats was a 1979 manual. Would that work just as well, or, did they make enough changes to matter in 1980?

Added Sta-bil marine formula to gas tank couple of weeks ago, without running the motor. Next time running the motor, it smoked a lot more than usual. Blue/white smoke. I ran the motor for quite a while. Ran fine, but continued to smoke more than usual. Does the Sta-bil cause that?
My motor is 1980 70HP. I find oil in the propeller, the oil looks milky when I drain the lower unit, and I see a lot of oil blown into the water when running the motor. So I'm thinking I should replace the oil seals and O ring in the bearing housing on the propeller shaft.
The manual I have...
I have a 1971 50hp with electric shift which still works well.
I have used standard-fare 80w90 marine gear lube in it for 9 years or more. I just found out that Johnson makes a special oil for those electric shift motors, so I plan to change it out.
Question: should I just change the oil...
A couple of weeks ago I posted several questions about my 1980 70hp starting and running well, then after a few minutes, bogging down and stopping.
This forum led me to test the spark on each cylinder. I did that and found #3 cylinder not firing. The forum then led me to replace the...
1980 70hp Johnson 3 cyl.
I'm getting ready to buy a power pack and 3 ignition coils.
I've found four options for brands. CDI, Sierra, Mallory, or the actual Johnson-brand parts.
While I know this may start an unending debate, I'm curious if there is a consensus about the quality of the...
Thanks to this forum I'm moving ahead.
Expert, humor me if you will....
Here are the facts:
1980 Johnson 70hp 3 cyl.
Starts easily, runs well for 10-15 mins, then bogs down and finally quits
No spark on #3 cyl after motor misbehaved. Spark good on 1 & 2.
Swapped coil wires #3 with #2...
My engine starts well, warms up, boggs down, and finally dies and won't re-start. I'm suspecting electrical....
Would someone give me some quick tips about checking spark, checking compression, using a remote starter switch, and testing coils / powerpack?
