How do you know if you need a new axle?

MY side mount lever has alot of "play" in the forward position. Boat still goes in gear nicely and is responsive but I have to hold control near the base to get best results. I took it apart and it looks as if there is a metal gear type nut that is turned by the plastic of the lever.
