I've got a 1979 85hp with a 1-piece and while working on it I've noticed the driveshaft can be pulled up about 1/8". I've done some looking but haven't seen a spec for this. The lower unit doesn't leak water, no sign of metal in the gear oil and shifts normally.
Am I OK to keep running this...
I dropped the lower unit yesterday for a little water pump work and realized that the lower crankshaft seal has been blown out. The metal retainer (that looks kinda like a cricular spring) was at the bottom of the driveshaft sitting on top of the water pump. A quick check with a flash light...
