1988 Volvo Penta 5.7 w/duo prop. Can anything be damaged by shifting controller while motor is off? It felt very stiff and forced while doing so. boat on trailer / outdrive all the way up.

Looking to repower 1989 blusfin sportsman aluminum v it has 90 hp capacity I would like to keep weight down with a 2 stroke. Found a 90 hp new yamaha with carbs. What do you think ? Changing controls not a problem . Old anyway. I would like to be able to service it myself as much as possible.
