1996 GM V6 with Penta out drive runs great most of the time but two or three times a year the engine backfires and dies at cruise speed. starter grinds and will not turn over due to water being in the cylinders.

Is an alignment tool necessary? I'm replacing the gimbal bearing and u-joint bearings along with the bellows. Ive seen posts suggesting the use of an alignment tool or even using the actual shaft as an alignment tool prior to reinstalling the lower unit.
