Biggest part of that was the lower unit itself. Not many around this area. Had a few mechanics tell me they are hard to come by because they would have to be from a bad powerhead to be a good lower unit and those power heads dont go bad hardly at all. So I looked on line Craigs list and Ebay...

FINAL update: I AM ALL SET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have my boat back with a lower unit that appears to be just fine. Took it out on the lake for a real quick work out. Motor still starts perfect and runs like a top. The thing shifts gears properly and no weird sounds or feeling like a misfire...

I looked all around here and finally found a lower unit that is compatible. Will be picking it up later today. The guy said he changed the water pump two years ago, and had it all re-sealed at that time. I gave the new seal kit and the new water pump kit to the guy doing my repairs, so he is...

OK My mechanic called me today, bad news! I need to replace the lower unit on the motor. The worse was suspected, and that's what it is. Looking for a good lower unit for the thing. 1991 35 H.P. Johnson. Any ideas where to pick one up at??

Yep. He sent me a link on the parts and the gear case seals & water pump kit were all for 20 - 35 H.P. motors, model years 1980 - 2005. As soon as I get the parts (Saturday I am hoping) he will be getting my rig over to his place. The place I ordered them from are here in Michigan, about 130...

I understand this, however, I think he wanted me to order the parts because there are absolutely no numbers or markings on my motor at all. I think I posted this in my original post, and he probably did not want to order parts for a motor that I am not even sure what it is, so I can understand...

I put it into the bottom hole until it came out of the top hole, then put the screw back into the top hole before I removed the pump hose from the bottom hole to replace that screw. I put the bottom screw in last and motor was in a straight vertical position. I just talked to my mechanic...

UPDATE: 6-24-2026 Finally got my bost out to the lake. Ran the motor for about15-20 minutes going up and down with the throttle and changing gears a lot between forward, neutral & reverse, giving it a good workout. Brought her home and drained the oil from the gear case. I do not know...

Thanks again guys! I honestly still did not get out to the lake due to rain and winds and graduation parties this past week. I did run the motor on a set of muffs in my driveway though. I did not see any oil leaking out as I did before when I filled it prior to me finding & removing the weed...

UPDATE: I have not been able to get my boat onto the lake yet as we have had nothing but storms just popping up the past few days here in Mich. Ran the motor some more on the muffs in my driveway however, and so far, so good. I talked to a mechanic and he said he would pressure test the gear...

Thanks to all of you. I am planning on taking it out on the lake today. I am going to run it then come home, then after a few hours, drain the oil to see what it looks like. I am pretty sure I will be doing more with it really soon. Thanks!

Thanks again. I do have oars AND I do have on the water towing service available on any lake in Michigan, so I will be ok if anything happens. I also have an electric trolling motor (that's what I used today to get back to the dock). I plan on going out there again tomorrow on lake St...

Problem I have with this motor is that I cannot identify if it is a 30 or 35 H.P. 1990 Johnson. There are no numbers, tags, serial numbers. nothing to be found to I.D. this motor. I said it kinda makes me think that through the years, it was a stolen motor. I've only had it for a few years...

Yes, I turned the flywheel by hand, and I had a good pisser going when I left the dock. This motor never ran hot for me as yet. Thanks for the suggestion!
