    Power steering question

Thank you so much for your reply Bondo and thats what I thought was the problem. This is a photo from last year when I replaced the Tiller Clevis pin. The other day I disconnected it again, like the photo and swung the tiller, easily moving, all good. At the same time I drilled out the Cable...

    Power steering question

1988 Mercruiser 4.3 Alpha One My steering is a little stiff, it's rack and pinion and power steering. I've disconnected the cable and I can turn the wheel with one finger, so it's not that. I disconnected the tiller and can turn the Stern Drive easily and smoothly. However with the cable...

Gear oil leak, but from where?

Mine, Alpha One, has another housing onto which the impeller housing sits, whereas a Gen 2 the seal is the cone below the impeller housing, usually yellow. Sounds as if that's the problem if not replaced 🤔 Let's hope that's the culprit eh?

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Thanks chaps, I found an old bike inner tube with a schrader valve attached. So I'm going to try the suggested jury rig and see if I can put 10lbs psi in and see if it holds. If it does then I guess its just fogging oil.

Gear oil leak, but from where?

I've got a similar problem but with an oil dribble in the prop, the guys on here have been so helpful. However in your case if its coming out of the water intake, it could be the water pump seal leaking but thats been replaced or it could be the upper drive shift seal leaking and dribbling down...

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Yes I have a a gear oil pump, but thought it may not be strong enough to hold pressure, although it is only 10-12lbs psi. what a great idea, thanks. I've got a bike pump that goes up to 70psi so it should work. Thank you.

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Thank you so much to all of you for your help. I'm trying to follow Tanks advice by trying to source a pressure tester. There are quite a few available in the UK but none with a 3/8 16 thread. I can find a 3/8 18 hose adapter which might work with a foot pump, but nothing with a 3/8 16 thread...

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Yes Jimmbo you are so right, it does stink. So the first dribble was fairly clear greeny colour about the size of a finger nail, the second dribble was a little emulsified as few drops of oil in the residual water from the cooling.

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Kenny, the Shift Shaft seal (which showed through the tell tale hole) and the Shift Shaft Bushing (with Gen II bush)was replaced a few years ago, they both look dry.

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Yes Scott the PAS fluid was low during testing, so topped it up, but PAS fluid is red, this looked more green than red. Very interesting diagnosis though, thanks.

Can you just pressure test the lower gearcase or do you have to reinstall it to the upper case?

Dribble of oil at prop, usual suspects checked, now puzzled

Alpha One 1988 attached to Mercruiser V6 1988 Hi guys, I haven't been able to use the boat this year, weather's been sh*te and people visiting etc. However with a break in the weather, no company and Mrs FS working I bought the boat home from the yard to do some checks etc. Engine runs fine but...
