    Pressure Testing Specs

I am pressure testing my drive and am confused by how long the drive should hold its pressure. Some people say 15 psi for 2-3 minutes. Other people say 10 psi for 12 hours. In my case I pumped it up to 12 psi and it held for 1 hour. I left it for 12 hours and it dropped from 12 to 10. Since...

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

Thanks everyone for your help. I was able to separate the bearings and redid the rotational torque to a value between 4.5 and 5 IP. The manual calls for 5 IP but when I got that close I decided any additional tightening would bring me over the 5 limit. Now having done this, I realize that what I...

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

Without sounding really stupid, I need some verification. I finally received the bearing separator tool so now I want to get on with the job. My understanding is that I am separating the two bearings from each other.. Not the bearing closet to the gear from the gear. Once there is a space...

    Engine Alignment Almost There

Yes, me too! But I feel that the drive was out of alignment for 10 years and now its closer to alignment than it has ever been, then I would probably be OK for a while. When I inspected the splines with a scope they looked good which surprised me. My garage is tied up this winter with another...

    1993 4.3 engine winterization

Plastic will break eventually for sure. But if you replace them every few years, you probably will never see it happen. They are cheap and easy to remove. I remove mine every time I return from using the boat to drain the engine. In 10 years I had one break that had been in the engine 8 years...

    1993 4.3 engine winterization

Why not just use the blue plastic plugs without sealer. They have an o-ring to prevent leaking. They are easy to install and remove, and if they ever break they can be remove easily.

    Engine Alignment Almost There

Thanks for your comment. Looks like I am going to live with it. The splines in the coupler appear to be OK so I can't justify replacing the coupler at this time. When the couplers zerk fitting is at 1:00 the alignment bar goes in with thumb pressure. At 7:00, I need to push it in with hand...

Engine install and align. what am I doing so wrong??

You don't mention the year of your assembly. Mercruiser changed their rear motor mount in 2003. So if you have an older transom assembly and post 2003 bell housing then you need a different setup. The double lock washer is replaced with a single washer and the bushing has an extended center...

    Engine Alignment Almost There

I have an alignment question on my 4.3L with Alpha 1 Gen 2 Outdrive. But first some background. The boat is a 2000 Sea Ray with the original Transom and Outdrive. The engine was replaced before I bought the boat with a complete 2009 4.3L. Since I have owned the boat I could never do a...

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

Rick, so it would be better to create a bigger separation between the bearing and the gear face.

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

Rick, thanks. I pretty much figured that. I don't have a bearing splitter big enough to do the job so I may have to go to a marina and see if I can talk them into splitting it. Now correct me if I am wrong, but all I need to do is separate the bearing from the gear just a small amount. I am...

    Driveshaft Gear Rotational Torque

Alpha 1 Gen 2 Sterndrive. I am replacing the driveshaft seal and when reinstalling the nut on the U-Joint assembly, I tightened it to 6.5 rotational inch pounds. The manual calls for 5.25 inch pounds for used bearings and 8 IP for new bearings and warns that if you go over you need to...

    Thread Locker Choice

No. I am referring to the seals. In the case of the driveshaft, the seal I am referring to is the one that gets pushed into the carrier plate.
