my engine is using a lot of oil. runs great at planing speed and does not smoke but at slow speeds it smokes. i would estimate i went 12 miles and i used a gallon of oil. i can't afford the cost of oil 20 dollars a gallon. any suggestions on where to start?

i just installed a new rubex propeller that came with the rubber adapter ring. when i tightened the propeller it would hardly turn. i took the rubber ring off and it turned easily. i'm afraid the difficulty of the prop turning may cause some problems? any advice?
