Here it is..I even hate to ask....Out on Raystown Lake last sunday...had to switch to back up tank as I was running low...Just filled it up..NEVER added OIL!!! Chrysler 55 HP objected to this and shut down. No overheat buzzer. Will have to install one... Well it would not retart on the lake so I trolled back to the dock, then home. I tried to get it going back at the house. But to no avail. Went to my local " we breakem..he fix 'em guy". He had me load up the fuel to double oil. Spay some into the cyl's and try to get it going that way. Took 15 + tries but finally got it going. Ran hot (to the touch) at first but after 5+/- minutes the expelled water bgab to cool. She ran pretty rough and had no idle. Took off carbs and soak - cleaned them. Floats needle all seem Good. Put them back on and with a little adjusting got it calmed down idled OK. Well I would like to try it out again tomorrow first at the house. Should I continue on this course or stop and do what...? It's a Chrysler 55 Model 559H8 ser # 3418. Been reading your posts and thought i'd better get off my duff and ask for input...Bought a Clymer's today, like to have them on hand (love all the pictures!!)So there it is I not proud..but it happened..And now I sending it out to you guys..Thanks in advance..Bill

Re: What's next?

No use doing anything until you check compression. if thats good, dump your fuel and try proper mix.(overmixing aint gonna help.)
If compression good, and unit runs good on proper mix you gotta make a choice...take a chance and run her(bearings could be damaged) or.....pull her down and check.....ouch.
Re: What's next?

Thanks, Yeah went back to proper mix in tank. In event I was going to go forward. Afraid to commit yet to takin her down due to avail of parts(gasket kits). Any easy way or good tip on checking compression. Should I invest in guage? What one? Any kind of recommends in that dept? Also hope someone can post the year for this.. Have charts on recommended compression 150-165..? Thanks

Re: What's next?

Borrow a gauge if this is a one timer for you. All plugs out, disable ignition, wide open throttle, 5 hits per cylinder, fingers crossed, I don't know the spec. for yours, but I'd want atleast 100psi minimum per cyl. and no more than 10% variation from highest to lowest.
How does it run with the proper mix?

Re: What's next?

Boat202...I have a 70hp Chrysler on a boat and like it very much. I think you have a 1979 year motor. Parts have never been a problem. I hope you have not fried your powerhead, but it is all rebuildable. Because Chrysler outboards are held in low esteem in some boating circles prices on good used parts can be somewhat reasonable in price, compared to more popular brands. I find mine to be quite reliable and powerful. If you do need new parts you can buy what you need from reputable dealers on the internet. I have bought a couple of parts from people in a group called the ChryslerCrew. If you search Chrysler Marine on a search engine you can find many places that can supply you with whatever you need.
Good luck and keep oil in your gas tank.
Thought101

Re: What's next?

Thought101 and boat20, Many Chrysler parts are interchangeable from Force engines. They are basicly the same engine except for ignition systems. There are other minor differences, but the good news is,Tilotsen carbs are still Tilotsen carbs, impellers, lower unit gasket sets, fuel pumkp diaphrams and many more parts can be found under the Quicksilver label.
They even decided to keep those horrible Chrysler "air chuck" style fuel line connectors.
I would trash that whole system, and use the Merc twist-on type. You guys know from experiance, probably, what a pain those air chucks are, when you are in swells,at night, and need to switch tanks. They also are bad about "looking" connected, when they actually are not....Bet you've been there too. I have.

Re: What's next?

Hi Thought 101, Checked Compression today (bought guage). 140 at # 1 and 130 at # 2, warm and at least 5 rotations. Ran motor with proper mix. Ran smokey and rough at first but cleaned up and idled after apx. 5 minutes. Any thoughts ?

I agree 12footer...Those "air chuck" connectors are going to go. They don't close with a "snap". No confidence there. What about Johnson type had those before and they seemed OK. I probably have 3 or 4 laying around. Just for reference there is no loger any conn. at the motor. Goes staight thru to the inline filter I put in...then bulb. ..Thanks for the responses guys....This is way cool to be able to join this forum....Bill

Re: What's next?

Next, run some carbon remover thru the engine. Either OMC Engine Tuner, Merc PowerTune or Seafoam. Follow the directions on any can, Seafoam works the fastest. It will clean up the combustion chambers and ring lands.

The lack of lubrication added heat. If the rings were carboned up they can disapate heat back into the pistons, they swell and will either break or sieze the engine possibly scoring the cylinder walls. Sounds like you lucked out, but I would clean the engine now and then do it again every 40-50 hrs. Start using good oil like OMC or Merc.

Re: What's next?

OK. Been working on this motor again tonight replaced impeller, disc and Shaft seal. Was going to check thermostat and put in hot water to see what temp it opens. Found out it is missing. Order replacement..or leave out?

Re: What's next?

Bought the OMC Engine tuner p/n 771297. Will run through this weekend. Founf small leak at bulb/primer. Would this cause hard to start symptoms. Bulb does not feel right..Not exactly getting hard and not holding pressure.

Re: What's next?

boat202; Sometimes I get "busy" [forget], and several times I have almost forgot to add oil. Lately, I carry a container of 2 cycle in the boat. When I switch tanks, I'll dump the oil into the empty one. It works for me! Happy Boating,Hal ;)
;)

Re: What's next?

Hi Hal,
Yeah can't beleive it to this day...UGH!.. I even had my oil in the boat...Thinking now about flagging the "mixed cans" with a clip on green flag. After I fill em up I'll flag em. Hence only run Green Tanks......

Tha's the problem with portable tanks. I like to have two onboard.

Well on the front line I have de-carbbed the engine twice and have it running in the tank in the garage. Replaced Impeller, crankshaft seal was rotted. Replaced that as well. Compression still at 130# at 1 and 120# on number 2. Cleaned carbs and had a heck of a time gettin her to idle. But seems OK now. Found diaphragm in fuel filter seems way stretched ..So going to replace as precaution. Not back to the water yet. Hoping to get out 1 more time before the end of the year. Will post sea trials here...Thnx all who replied.
Bill
