In an attempt to understand what makes an outboard tick, I began disecting a friends old Elgin that he had given up for dead. It had compression and, after some tinkering, I got spark on both plugs. I have since completely disassembled, sanded, primed and painted the motor and I am now in the process of reassembly. It is here where I ran into some questions. After searching this forum throughout the rebuild (very helpful by the way) I noticed that not all old Elgins use the same fuel mixture nor the same lower end oil/grease. Likewise with the sparkplugs and gaps. Would any of y'all know these specs? I'm also having trouble finding an impeller, mine's turned to powder. I think finding it will be my biggest challenge. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

7.5 hp Elgin
Model # 571 58782
Serial # 782 17914
This model has foward/neutral only (no reverse)
I think it was made in 1957 by West Bend.

Re: Restoring Elgin 7.5 need tech info please

Thanks EZ. I spent the last few days going over these and found a few sites that I had not seen yet. The first link to the iboats posts didn't have anything on it. I found one on another search of Elgins but it was for the model with the full shift and if I've learned anything from this forum it's never to assume that outboards that are almost the same use the same specs and fluids. It's plugs were j11j gapped .050, points at .020 and ran a 104 or 90wt gear oil. Can anyone confirm this will work in the model I have?

I DID find someone selling an impeller for this model. flyingscott@earthlink.net has quite a few hard to find impellers. That's one monkey off my back.

Thanks again EZ

I was hoping one of these parts suppliers might be able to answer all of your questions. With old motors I think you just keep posting at boating sites until someone responds with the answer or a way to get it. Good luck!

Update:

IT'S ALIVE!

I fired her up this afternoon for the first time in twenty years! Only for a minute as I still haven't bought an impeller and I'm not sure if the 50/1 fuel mix I'm using is correct but I sure feel better about the project.

spots :)

when in question use more oil. i'd rather have smoke and fouls plugs, than a melted mess.

I'm pretty sure that engine needs a 24:1 Fuel mix. Most motors before 1963-64 need a 24:1

I tried Laings but that impeller is so weird that only one guy makes them. There was one NOS on Ebay a few weeks ago but I got outbid on it. Oh well. Thanks for the info.

spots
