I have a Larsen 1998, with a 4.3 Volvo 190hp carberated ( didn't see Volvo forum so I'll ask it here). When it was winterized last fall the drain plug on the intake manifold was missed, and I'll assume it is cracked.

I put it in the water today and I noticed gas smell after ran it at idle for awhile. I checked the engine compartment and nothing seemed wrong. I ran it a at 3/4 throttle nothing seemed wrong but it would cut out at full throttle.

I opened the motor cover and the motor was covered with the milky brown oil/ water mix. After I loaded it I checked the oil and it was also coated to the top with the same sludge.

I went and got several 5qt jugs of oil to change the oil tonight several times. I forgot about the oil filter though, I'll have to pull it and empty it between oil changes.

What damage might I have done to the engine other than the Manifold crack, and what other things might I do to try to save the engine? Is all this necessary - or might the oil changes wait. I'll have to briefly run the engine between oil changes tonight for a while without it being on the muffs.

Thanks for your help.

Steve in Iowa :(

Re: Help - water in the oil

Here it is 5:30 in the morning and I have been up all night with the boat.

First I pulled the belt off the water pump so wouldn't burn it out. Then went back to Walmart and bought the three oil filters they had for a a 4.3L chevy.

The sludge of water/oil was too thick to draw out through the dipstick hole. I pulled the plug on the oil pan and let it run into the bilge, which already had about an inch of the sludge in it. After a couple hours of draining sludge, I put in a new filter and 5 qts of oil. And I ran it until the engine started to overheat -about 10 minutes.

Repeated the draining of the oil/water and let it cool and drain again after 2 hrs. I put on a new oil filter and another 5qts of oil and repeated what I did before.

I did this a third time and the oil is now coming out like milk and finally very runny.

The oil is $4.87 (5 qt jug) and the filters are less than $2. I figure I'll have to do this a few more times to get the oil looking right.

Then I get to look forward to the tear down for the Intake manifold- any one have a good source on one?

Of course I had to do all of this at the Boat launch so I wouldn't wake the neighbors here on the lake.

Steve in Iowa

ahsah

You will get faster and better results if you post in the "I/O or Inboard Engine Repair & Questions" section. This is for Merc outboards and many here may not be able to help you as well. Try re-posting here:

Post Here
