I need to ship a small outboard (9.9 evinrude) from Florida to Canada. From your experience, what is the best way, courier, freight company etc ?

I haven't shipped any across the border, but have had to get things across the border a few times.
I would have it shipped to a US location like Buffalo. Then drive down and bring it across in person.

Have shipped/recieved motors with FedEx Logistics and ABF Freight.
Would recommend having motor crated in plywood, not just strapped to a pallet.

Is there any paper work that needs to accompany the motor to show that its not stolen etc ? WHat about customs docs ? The motor is dissassembled now and I only want it for parts so a wooded crate seems OK I would think. Wish I could find things like this locally but they just don't seem to exist. If I were to ship to Buffalo, where would it be received ? I have someone in Niagara Falls that could easily run across the border to pick it up.

You could ship it from Florida, to the trucking company's terminal near the border. Pick it up at the terminal. Proper id will be needed, id must match the name on the crate. A sales reciept showing the seller, item description (box of motor parts), and value should be all you need. You will need to go into the Customs office on the Canadian side and fill out a form, declare value, pay tax.

I've done this with dvd players, commercial kitchen equipment, laptop computers, refrigerator, furniture, and other misc items that I have hauled across the border.

RodC- I manage a small warehouse in Clarence, NY which is just outside Buffalo. If you want, you can have it shipped to my site and have your friend pick it up. We have Canadians pick up furniture quite often. I guess even after paying the duty they still save a ton of $ by buying it in the U.S.
Oh Yeah- No Charge for the service as long as I don't have to go in on my day off to meet your friend.

Let me know if you're interested.

Hey Rod,couple of things to think about, custom broker fee's, added by carrier to get it over the border will be nuts!!!!, and the paper work needed a nite mare. Might want to take dk6164 up on his offer. Fed -Ex freight can get from florida to Buffalo. If you do decide to ship it right to Canada, I can get you some info on what you will need.

Jim

dk6164,
Is your offer open to anyone?<grin> Maybe being a fellow Sunray owner will help? I've been in Rod's situation a few times. UPS broker fees can be -extremely- high. My latest shipment for an outboard motor cowling, the broker fees were substantially more than what I paid for the cowl. I asked for USPS (postal) and they shipped UPS (courier). Live 'n learn.
