do I have enough motor?

I just bought a new 12' flat bottom jon boat and a used 5 hp mariner... the mariner is an 80's model but is in new condition. I'm not sure what year exactly but the motor revs up fine in nuetral yet seems to sputter in gear like its not strong enough to push me good. I would think that the motor would open up more in gear... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Typically a fuel supply problem try a little choke if it helps then check the fuel system from tank to carb.Tank vent,hoses,connectors,fittings,<br /> fuel pump(if any)carb etc.

my friend has a 12' boat with a 7hp and it dont get on a plane.i'm rebuilding a 25 for it now.it should push it
