have a believe 79 evinrude 115 horse motor runs great hooked to a hose on land but will only run at full throttle in the water won't idle at all.. idles great hooked to a hose could this be a bad water pump problem and if so are they difficult to replace???

Sounds like it needs a carb cleaning and tune-up to me.

I'm with Walker but would replace the water pump in any case if you don't know how long it has been since it was changed. It is not a big deal but I recommend that you get the OMC shop manual to do it.

There is no back pressure when running the engine on muffs. In the lake, back pressure can cause the engine to stall. Idle mixture and speed needs to be set with the engine in the lake. The water pump is not likelyly the problem although if hasn't been replaced in recent years its about due.
