WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CHANGE LOWER UNIT OIL IN MY MOTOR. I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO FILL IT UP FROM THE BOTTOM HOLE....IS THIS CORRECT AND HOW SHOULD I DO THIS.THE MOTOR IS RAN IN FRESH WATER.ALSO I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS THE CORRECT GAP FOR THE SPARK PLUGS , IT HAS QL77JC4 IN IT NOW . WHEN I PULLED THE TOP TWO PLUGS OUT THE ELECTRODES LOOKED LIKE THERE WAS .08-.100 GAP THEN THE OTHERS LOOKED LIKE .040. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hello Speedywrtn:<br /><br />The lower gear oil is changed by removing the upper and lower screws (make sure the gaskets for these are good, otherwise replace them) and pumping the oil in from the bottom until it starts to come out the top. Then put the top screw (with gasket) back in and the en bottom screw (also with gasket). Sorry I can't help you with your spark plug question, as I don't have a manual for that year motor.

Those plugs will be fine gapped at .030 to .040.<br /><br />Or you can use the QL78YC. I prefer the QL77JC4's in mine.

sooo.... is it possible to fill from the top, but maybe it takes longer for the oil to settle, then keep toping it off until it take no more ? <br /><br />I filled mine from the top while slowly turning the prop in gear, waited 5 minutes and filled some more, topped it off until it took no more...like I would do to a car...<br /><br />Kevin

Filling from the top will trap air somewhere. You stand a great chance of running the unit low on oil.

Hey speedywrth i also have a 175 faststrike just put the ql77jc4 my gap on the old plugs was way off to i set the new ones like dhadley said to 30 and it runs so much better,whats your boatand were you from in tn.
