Trim/Tilt 1981 75hp

The trim on this boat has never worked 100%. I have finally had it and am planning on overhauling the cylinders. The motor runs but the hydraulics seem to have a heck of a time lifting the engine in tilt range, then the motor seems to strain and run slower when trimming down. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: Trim/Tilt 1981 75hp

Welcome aboard iboats Remy!

Have you checked the TNT fluid level? If you have, did you do it with the engine tilted all the way up? If not, there probably isn't enough fluid in the reservoir.

Tilt the engine all the way up. Check the level in the reservoir and top off. Level should be even with the plug hole. Cycle the engine all the way down and all the way up 3 to 4 times. Leave the engine tilted all the way up and check the reservoir again. Repeat process as needed until reservoir level stays constant.

Let us know how ya' make out....thanks.

In addition to OBJ's reply, remove, clean, and tighten all related electrical connections which pertain to the PTT unit. This would include the battery terminal canle connections, and all plug in connections. A loose, or tight but dirty connection would result in a voltage drop to the PTT electric motor.

Re: Trim/Tilt 1981 75hp

I have checked and rechecked the fluid levels. I will check the electrical connections in he morning. The junction box is the one solenoid type and the green (down)wire has been connected directly from the switch to the trim motor at the junction box and shrink sealed. The blue (up) lead goes through the sloenoid. The jumper bar has been removed and is not used. Can I "hot wire the blue lead to the battery to bypass any "connection" problems?

Yes you can but be sure you use a heavy enough jumper. The "up" position draws a lot more amperage than the down position. Hence the solenoid for "up".

EDIT: Use the jumper for testing only. If it's found that the solenoid is at fault, replace it.

I got my hands on a Seloc manual. After reading for a couple of hours I feel the problem might be in the tilt valve. I will hot wire the tomorrow first before I go to the trouble removing the entire unit to valve test. Are these valves available? How expensive? rebuild or replace?

Re: Trim/Tilt 1981 75hp

The main valves are pricey Remy....bout' $52 per valve. If you take it apart, chances are you'll just find some junk in them and probably won't need replaced. What you will need to replace is the o-rings all of which are available at your John/Rude dealer. Start with the cylinders first. They are the easiest to do. Try the unit for operation. Might not have to go any further.

I have found a used 2 wire model that I can pick up pretty cheap. Is it hard to convert from three wire to two wire?

I figured out the trim problem. It was the pump control piston o-ring. I went ahead and replaced all the check valve o-rings. Now I am in the process of purging the system, but, it looks like it is going to work once I get it back on the boat. Water intake screen next. Thanks for all your help guys.

Re: Trim/Tilt 1981 75hp

Trim checked out good after the fix. dropped the lower unit and replaced intake screen and changed out o-rings and back to back bearing housing seals while I was in there. Checks out o.k. in the driveway. I will take the boat out tomorrow for a shakedown and duck scouting run.

I wanted to thank you folks for the help. I really ended up saving a ton of dough with your help. $30 compared to $300 to $400 for a new trim or aftermarket replacement. Even a previous trip to the boat shop did not give me the results I got here.

Again. THANKS!!
